St Anne’s Muthale Girls School is a national girls’ secondary school located in Kitui County. The learning institution was established in 1970 by Fr. Sean Doggett and the Catholic Franciscan Sisters of Kitui Diocese as a single-stream Harambee mixed school.
The first principal was Fr. Doggetts, who led the school until 1974. In 1985, the boys were phased out to make the school a girls-only boarding school. The ‘A’ level stream was phased out in 1989 following the nationwide shift to Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system. Since then, student admissions were determined by performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.
In 2023, the KCPE was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. St Anne’s Muthale became double-streamed in 1997 before it was elevated to a national school in 2011, admitting the first national class in 2012.
Throughout these changes, the school has consistently expanded in both size and academic performance, with a current enrolment of over 1500 students.
