Potterhouse School, located in Nairobi, Kenya, is a private Christian institution established in May 2002.

The school’s location in Runda, a suburban area, positions it at a strategic location for families in and around Nairobi, catering to a diverse student body from age 2 through high school.

Potterhouse Curriculum

The school offers the British National Curriculum, preparing students for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). Its educational structure is divided into three sections to accommodate different age groups.

Kindergarten

Potterhouse School’s Kindergarten caters to children aged 2 to 5 years, covering Nursery 2 through kindergarten 3.

It follows the British National Curriculum, specifically the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), tailored to foster early childhood development.

The lessons focus on integrating Christian principles, encouraging character building and moral growth.

The EFYS also focuses on foundational skills like literacy, numeracy, creativity, and critical thinking, preparing students for Key Stage One (Year 1).

The kindergarten environment is described as warm and supportive, with teachers aiming to inspire a love for learning and help children become confident communicators and problem solvers.

The 3–5-year-old children take part in extra- curricular activities like swimming, football, gymnastics, ballet, dance, and beadwork.

Key Stage One at Potterhouse School

Key Stage One (KS1) at Potterhouse School includes Year 1 and Year 2, catering to children aged approximately 5 to 7 years old. This stage follows the Early Years section (ages 2-5) and precedes Key Stage Two (Years 3-6, ages 7-11).

Key Stage One at Potterhouse follows an adapted form of the BNC, which focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical application of knowledge.

Subjects include Mathematics, English, Science, Geography, History, Art, Physical Education, Music, a modern Foreign Language, and ICT.

The curriculum is designed to build foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and communication while fostering curiosity and creativity.

The school integrates a bibliocentric philosophy, where Biblical principles guide teaching, aiming to develop students’ spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth.

The focus is on creating a supportive environment that encourages excellence and character development.

Lessons combine whole-class instruction, group activities, and hands-on learning to engage students and promote independent thinking.

The school emphasizes project-based learning to support creativity and practical skill development.

The TOPAS Partnership (Teachers, Owners, Parents, Administration, and Students) ensures a collaborative approach to education, prioritizing students’ holistic development.

Admission to Key Stage One involves an informal interview for younger students and a joining test to assess suitability.

The academic year runs from late August/early September to July, with regular hours from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

Potterhouse offers programs like KUMON, LEGO Education, and other extracurricular activities to enhance learning and skill development.

The school provides a parent portal for tracking student performance and encourages visits to experience the dynamic learning environment.

Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers Years 3 to 6, catering to students aged 7 to 11, as part of the British National Curriculum (BNC).

In KS2, the curriculum builds on Key Stage 1, deepening skills in core subjects: English (reading, writing, comprehension), Mathematics (numeracy, problem-solving), and Science (basic concepts in biology, chemistry, physics).

The curriculum includes Humanities (History, Geography), Art and Design, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Physical Education, and Music to foster creativity and physical development.

The children are told to emphasize on critical thinking, independent learning, and practical application of knowledge.

The classes are small in size to increase personalized attention, with teachers and students learning by use of modern tools like Google Classroom and Active Learn for blended learning.

Regular assessments are conducted to monitor progress among the students, including internal tests and projects.

Activities like sports, arts and LEGO education are offered to enhance the skills of the students and to prepare them for Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 (KS3) spans Years 7 to 9, catering to students aged 11 to 14.

The curriculum is same with KS2 curriculum, with more focus on developing analytical skills, critical thinking, and a foundation for IGCSE subject choices in Key Stage 4.

Students transitioning from the Kenyan 8-4-4 system (e.g., after KCPE) typically enter Year 9 and receive tailored support to match with the BNC.

The academic year is from September to July, as per the northern hemisphere calendar.

Key Stage 4

The curriculum at KS4 focuses on IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) qualifications, recognized globally for university entry.

The main subjects are English (Language and/or Literature), Mathematics, and Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, often offered as single or combined sciences).

Elective subjects may include Humanities (History, Geography), Business Studies, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Modern Foreign Languages, Art and Design, or others based on student choice and school offerings.

At KS4, teachers emphasize on critical thinking, exam preparation, and practical application of knowledge.

The students also have tailored guidance to help students select IGCSE subjects aligned with future academic or career goals.

There are continuous assessments through coursework, mock exams, and projects to ensure readiness.
