Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba on Tuesday August 27 announced that the government will release Ksh13.5 billion to address teachers’ needs in accordance with the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CВА).
Ogamba said the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has worked round the clock to ensure that all public-school teachers receive their July and August salary raises by Friday this week.
Furthermore, educators across the country are set to benefit from a pay increase starting at the end of this month.
Initially, teachers expected the pay review to begin at the start of the current financial year on July 1st. However, the review was delayed due to insufficient funds- according to the government.
Teachers Salary Increase
The salary review is between Ksh1,037 for the least paid teacher and Ksh3,005 at the highest level.
This means that the lowest-paid teacher at grade B5 will now receive a basic salary of Ksh 23,830, up from Ksh 22,739.
At the same time, senior teachers at the primary school level in grade C2, who currently earn Ksh 45,776 in basic pay, will see their salary rise to Ksh 47,858.

Allowances Paid
Meanwhile, teachers across the 11 job grades are entitled to various allowances.
This includes a monthly commuter allowance ranging from Ksh4,000 at the entry level to Ksh 16,000 at the highest level. Additionally, teachers are entitled to leave allowances between Ksh4,000 and Ksh10,000, depending on their job group, payable once a year.
For those teaching in hardship areas, the hardship allowance ranges from Ksh6,600 to Ksh38,100, depending on the job group.
Housing allowances are also provided, categorized into four broad areas based on location.
In cluster one, which includes teachers based in Nairobi, the housing allowance ranges from Ksh6,750 to Ksh50,000, depending on the job group.
However, in other major cities and towns like Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Nyeri, the housing allowance is between Ksh 4,500 and Ksh 35,000.
For educators in areas categorized as former municipalities, the housing allowance ranges from Ksh 3,850 to Ksh 25,000.

KUPPET Strike
The review comes as the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) began their strike on Monday, August 26, after 68 members of the National Governing Council voted in favor of the job boycott.
One of the demands made by KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori was employment of 46,000 intern teachers on permanent and pensionable basis.
However, their sister union, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), decided to call off their strike as it engages the government on the way forward.
Secretary General Collins Oyuu stated that this decision was made to allow TSC and the government time to address their demands.
