Zubeida Kananu, from the Standard Media Group, has been elected as the new president of the Kenya Editors Guild, succeeding Churchill Otieno.
The election was held on Saturday, with 110 people participating in the voting process. Kananu won seventy-two votes, while her competitor, Sammy Muraya from Journalists for Human Rights, garnered thirty-six.

In addition to Kananu, Ruth Nesoba from the BBC was elected as the new vice president. Nesoba won seventy-three votes, while James Ng’ang’a Mbugua from People Daily received 35 votes. Francis Mureithi, the digital editor of Radio Africa Group, was elected unopposed as the council member of Online. Linda Bach from Standard Media Group was also retained as the council member of Print.
Kananu expressed her delight at being elected as the new president and promised to serve her colleagues with commitment and dedication. She thanked everyone for believing in her and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of journalists, especially during demonstrations. The Kenya Editors Guild is an organization that represents the interests of editors in the country and advocates for press freedom and journalistic excellence.
