President William Ruto traveled to New York on September 20, 2026, to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, joining heads of state and delegations from UN member states.
The United Nations has scheduled the 81st General Assembly High-Level Week for September 22 to 29, with the General Debate running from September 22 to 26 and 28.
UN further identified American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) as its official travel agency in New York for official travel to the UNGA meeting.
“The point of contact designated by the Member State will be contacted by the travel agent to approve the issuance of tickets within one day of the approval of the travel request. The proposed itinerary should be accepted no later than the ticketing deadline established by the airlines and communicated by American Express Global Business Travel,” part of the UN Delegates handbook directs.
For Member State delegations attending the General Assembly, the UN’s protocol rules focus on registration, credentials, access, and logistical arrangements.
However, the UN notes that the Kenyan government, its mission in New York, or other government arrangements can make accommodation arrangements for a president and the accompanying national delegation.
New York, however, has several hotels with documented histories of accommodating presidents and other senior diplomatic delegations during UN General Assembly meetings.
The hotels include Lotte New York Palace, Waldorf Astoria New York, Mandarin Oriental New York, Warwick New York, and InterContinental New York Barclay.
Lotte New York Palace
Lotte New York Palace is among the most prominent hotels associated with presidential UNGA stays.
The hotel is located on Madison Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and combines the historic Villard Mansion with a 55-story tower.
Its most exclusive accommodation is the Royal Suite Collection, which includes eight suites ranging from about 2,500 to 5,000 square feet.
Four of the suites are three-floor penthouses with private elevators and rooftop terraces.
The hotel also has Towers, where the Royal Suite Collection is located, and operates as a separate private reception area with dedicated concierge services, including a Maybach car.
Lotte’s Presidential-Level Suite costs from $7,500 to $25,000, approximately KSh975,000 to KSh3.25 million per night.

Mandarin Oriental, New York
The hotel is located at 80 Columbus Circle, at the southwest corner of Central Park.
Under the presidential accommodation category, the hotel offers presidential suites and two-bedroom presidential suites at an average rate of $21,814 per night, approximately KSh 2.83 million.
On the 53rd floor, the suites are about 2,640 square feet, with floor-to-ceiling windows and views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline, a fully equipped kitchen, dining space for eight, a walk-in wardrobe, a marble bathroom, a deep soaking bathtub, a glass-enclosed steam shower, and a separate study and media room.
Services offered include 24-hour in-room dining, a Bose sound system, a Nespresso coffee machine, a Dyson hairdryer, and complimentary packing and unpacking, along with its luxury hotel services.
InterContinental New York Barclay
Located at 111 East 48th Street in Midtown Manhattan, the hotel offers presidential suites, along with the Harold S. Vanderbilt Penthouse and Ministerial Suite.
The Presidential Suite has expansive living and dining areas, bedrooms and bathrooms, an entertainment center, a grand marble entrance, a private fitness room, a library/office, and a baby grand piano in a 3,400-square-foot room.
Diplomatic Arrangements include private express elevators, a hotel entrance, 24-hour on-site security, a secure panic room in the Presidential Suite, a dedicated diplomatic/security team, VIP meet-and-greet check-in and check-out, private gyms in the Presidential and Penthouse suites, and customized welcome amenities.
Waldorf Astoria New York
Before Lotte New York Palace became the US delegation’s preferred UNGA hotel, the Waldorf Astoria New York had long hosted American presidents and visiting world leaders.
It is located at 301 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and charges approximately KSh 906,360 per night.
The restored Waldorf Astoria combines Art Deco architecture with modern luxury, and its rooms and suites include marble bathrooms, deep soaking tubs, rain showers, spacious living areas, and Park Avenue views.
Luxury guest services include concierge assistance, housekeeping, valet parking, and Hilton Honors services.

Warwick New York
Warwick has historically accommodated visiting political leaders during UN General Assembly periods, including the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in 2011.
The New York property is a luxury Midtown hotel offering rooms and suites, dining, concierge and guest services, and a location close to major Manhattan diplomatic and business locations.
Some suites at the hotel could cost up to £1,000 per night.
Kenyan Civil Servant’s Monthly Pay Compared to New York Presidential Suites
Kenyan civil servants are paid according to Civil Service Grades (CSG), with each grade carrying a different basic salary range.
According to current Public Service Commission figures, monthly basic salaries range from KSh26,900 to KSh35,380 for CSG 12.
CSG 10 earn KSh39,700–KSh52,960, KSh90,200–KSh124,630 for CSG 7, and KSh143,640–KSh262,420 for CSG 5.
The cost of a single night in some of New York’s presidential-level suites can equal several years of a Kenyan civil servant’s basic salary, depending on the hotel and the officer’s Civil Service Grade.
At the $7,500 rate, a CSG 12 civil servant earning KSh26,900–KSh35,380 per month would need approximately 27–36 months to earn the same amount in basic salary.
Based on the highest publicly listed rate of $25,000, a CSG 12 officer would need approximately 7.7–10 years to earn the equivalent amount in basic salary.
