Cabinet Secretary for Health, Susan Nakhumicha on Sunday, November 12 delivered locally assembled smartphones to Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in Kapenguria Constituency, West Pokot County.
While taking to her official X account, the health CS affirmed how the smartphones would benefit the CHPs noting that her ministry was on the course towards issuing the gadgets to every CHP in the country.
“As a Ministry, we are on course to ensuring all the 100,000 CHPs across the country are well trained and issued with the electronic gadgets that will aid in timely and efficient transmission of patient’s data digitally,” Susan Nakhumicha noted.
Further, the CS said the ministry of health was prioritizing the salaries of the CHPs to ensure that they would receive them in time.
“I thank the West Pokot County leadership led by H.E Governor Simon Kachapin for heading our call on ensuring the CHPs receive their monthly stipend on time,” Susan Nakhumicha further stated.
Promises by President Ruto to CHPs
Notably, in June this year, President William Ruto stated that his government would spend at least Kshs 3.5 billion to provide the CHPs with the requisite medical equipment to facilitate their work countrywide.
The head of state also noted that Kshs 260 million would be provided annually by the national government and county governments to cater for their pay.
Under the arrangement, half of the amount will be provided by the national government while county governments will contribute Ksh. 130 million annually for the same.
In addition, CS Nakhumicha announced the delivery of medical supplies to hospitals in West Pokot County.

“The Ministry of Health has fulfilled the promise it made two months ago to support health facilities in West Pokot County,” she stated.
“Keringet Health Centre has received hospital beds and mattresses while Murkwijit dispensary has received a Medical Fridge, which is critical in preserving the potency and quality of life-saving medications and vaccines,” Nakhumicha added.
Locally Assembled Smartphones
The locally assembled smartphones were launched by President William Ruto in Mavoko, Machakos on October 30th, 2023.
The phones are assembled at Athi River’s East Africa Device Assembly (EADK).
Notably, the newly launched smartphones boast a unique feature, coming with the e-Citizen Services (GavaMkononi) App pre-installed.

Among the phones launched were the ‘Neon Smarta’ and ‘Neon Ultra’ models.
Furthermore, the phones are available to the public to be purchased either at all Faiba and Safaricom shops and agents countrywide.
The internet connectivity firm, Faiba announced that new customers stand a chance of earning 65GB (Ksh2000 worth) of free Faiba data upon purchase.
