Ex-KAM CEO Phyllis Wakiaga Lands Another Plum Job

Rita Kaveshe, the chair of the BAT board made the announcement through a public notice. 

British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya PLC has appointed Phyllis Wakiaga as an Independent Non-Executive Director of the company, effective October 23, 2023.

“Phyllis is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 18 years of experience Corporate Leadership, Governance, Public Policy, Government Relations, Sustainability and Private Sector Development,” the notice stated.

Additionally, the public notice pointed out that Phyllis is a Senior Advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which she joined in 2022.

Previous positions held by Phyllis Wakiaga

At Tony Blair Institute, Phyllis Wakiaga was tasked with driving the Institute’s continental public-private dialogue initiative.

She also was charged with the development of global investment programs across various sectors that are key to the continent’s economic transformation.

“Prior to this, Phyllis was the Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the Board at Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) where she served for 9 year and spearheaded industry led actions,” the notice further went ahead to express.

Wakiaga joined KAM in 2013 as the head of policy, research, and advocacy. Consequently, in 2015, she was appointed CEO after the exit of her predecessor, Betty Maina.

However, in April 2022, Phyllis Wakiaga stepped down from the position. 

Moreover, she has served on several boards over the years and is currently a Non-Executive Director at the Kenya Roads Board, and the Institute of Economic Affairs.

Additionally, she sat in the boards for the International Centre for Research on Women (Africa Board) and the Board of Trustees of the United States International University.

Wakiaga holds a degree in International Trade and Investment Law from the University of Nairobi.

She has also earned an Executive master’s in business administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Currently, she is a PhD at JKUAT pursuing Leadership and Governance.

Other Appointments by BAT

BAT also announced the appointment of Paul Muthaura as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

His appointment will also take effect from the 23rd of October.

Muthaura, who is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Carbon Markets Initiative.

The Africa carbon Markets Initiative has the objective of scaling high integrity carbon credit generation on the continent to shape and harness the potential of carbon markets in Africa.

He has also served as an Independent Consultant with EMRD Advisory Limited.

The notice also announced the resignation of Kathryne Maundu as the company secretary, effective October 23, 2023.

Kathryne has been the BAT company secretary since June 2020.

Consequently, BAT announced Waeni Ngea  as the new company secretary.
