The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Saturday, June 4 named aspirants who have been disqualified from contesting in the August General Election.
According to IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati the list came from the 241 names forwarded to the commission by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Chebukati further stated that IEBC evaluated the names and grouped them under; cases under investigation, prosecution, convicted without appeal and those convicted and pursuing an appeal.
In addition, the IEBC chair said aspirants banned from vying were only those who had been convicted without appeals, impeached from office, lacked required academic qualification and public officers who failed to resign by the stipulated dates.
Aspirants Disqualified for Impeachment
- Mike Mbuvi Sonko – He is the former Nairobi governor who was contesting for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat
- Chitavi Antony Mkhala – He was also eyeing the Mombasa gubernatorial seat
- Paul Karungo Thangwa – Former Kiambu Youth Executive Karungo Thang’wa who was seeking the Kiambu Senate seat.
Candidates with Invalid Academic Requirements
- Thuo Mathenge – He was contesting for the Nyeri Governor seat.
- Ekamais Jeremiah Loromukai – He is contesting for Turkana governor seat.
Candidates Convicted but Not Pursuing an Appeal.
- MCA David Njilithia Mberia – He was seeking the Karen County Assembly seat
Public Officers Who Did Not Resign by 9th February 2022.
IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati is yet to reveal the list. He stated that the list would be revealed after the close of the registration of aspirants as it is still being verified by the commission.
