Former Central Bank of Kenya Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge Ngugi is currently serving as a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, transitioning from his previous role in national monetary policy leadership.
Patrick Njoroge was the ninth Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and held the position in office from June 2015 to June 2023.
During his tenure, he oversaw a significant overhaul of the banking system in Kenya, including the launch of the first Kenya Banking Sector Charter.
He also led the country in the launch of the new generation of currency banknotes and coins, thus fulfilling a much-anticipated constitutional requirement.
Patrick Njoroge facilitated the growth of the Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprise sector, which has been the engine of growth of the Kenyan economy.
Career Life Of Patrick Njoroge
The Ex-CBK governor joined CBK after a 20-year career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC.
Prior to his appointment as Governor, Njoroge was Advisor to the IMF Deputy Managing Director from December 2012.

Here, his responsibilities included assisting in overseeing the IMF’s engagement with a large swath of IMF members.
Further, he served as Deputy Division Chief in the IMF’s Finance Department (2006-2012), IMF’s Mission Chief for the Commonwealth of Dominica (2005-2006), and in other capacities since 1995.
Prior to joining the IMF, Patrick Njoroge worked as an Economist at the Ministry of Finance (1993-1994) and as a Planning Officer at the Ministry of Planning (1985-1987).
Dr. Njoroge began his second four-year term in June 2019. He was appointed to the UN Task Force on Digital Financing by Secretary-General António Guterres in November 2018. He left CBK in June 2023.
Education Background
Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya from 2015 to 2023, has a strong academic foundation in economics, developed at leading institutions in Kenya and the United States.

He completed his early education at Mangu High School between 1973 and 1976, followed by A-Level studies at Strathmore College from 1977 to 1978.
Later, he joined the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1983 and a Master of Arts in Economics in 1985.
Dr. Njoroge proceeded to Yale University in the United States, where he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from 1987 to 1993.
During his doctoral studies, he worked under prominent economists, including William Brainard, James Tobin, and Robert Shiller.
