Biography
Ali Hassan Joho popularly known as Governor 001 is the Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.
Prior to his current role, Joho was the governor of Mombasa County and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader.
He is considered as a political kingpin in the coastal region.
Family
He has an elder brother named Abubakar Joho and two sisters. The governor is married to Madina Hassan Joho with whom he has four children.
Education of Hassan Joho
Joho attended Tom Mboya Primary School; however, his education was interrupted for a year due to lack of school fees.
Thereafter he attended Serani Secondary School, and during his time in Form 3, he took on odd jobs to support himself.
Hassan worked at the port, carrying luggage on his back, and later discovered additional ways to make a living when Somalia descended into civil war.
Later, he assisted in selling various items, which eventually made him a skilled salesman.
Joho’s educational background includes a BA in Business and Human Resource Management from Kampala University, along with diplomas in business and logistics.
Career
Joho entered politics in 2002 and later contested the Kisauni by-election in 2004 on a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ticket following the death of the sitting MP, Emmanuel Karisa Maitha.
However, in 2007, he ran for the Kisauni parliamentary seat and won under the Orange Democratic Movement.
In 2012, following a cabinet reshuffle by President Mwai Kibaki, Joho was appointed Assistant Minister for Transport in the Grand Coalition Government.
Additionally, on March 4th, 2013, Joho was elected as the first governor of Mombasa County, defeating his closest rival, Suleiman Shahbal, by a significant margin.
Afterward, his opponent filed a court petition to block Joho’s swearing-in, alleging election rigging. However, the petition was dismissed, and the swearing-in proceeded.
His tenure as governor was marked by his vocal advocacy for coastal issues and his contentious relationship with the national government.
Additionally, Joho faced several controversies, including a feud with the national government over the management of the Mombasa port.
Despite the allegations levelled against him, he successfully defended his political seat and was elected governor of Mombasa County for the second term in 2017.
