Mwaura Kabata is a Kenyan advocate of the High Court and serves as Vice President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) for the 2024-2026 term.
The LSK vice-president seeks to build on his role in the current leadership and continue what he describes as the Society’s advocacy-driven agenda under Faith Odhiambo.
As a seasoned legal practitioner based in Nairobi, he focuses on improving legal practice through digital reforms, such as the LSK’s paperless system, and on advocacy for efficiency in registries and anti-corruption efforts.
Kabata’s track record includes sponsoring LSK events, co-founding traditions like the Nairobi Branch Quiz Night, and earning a Committed Service Award in 2022.
Mwaura Kabata has been vocal on the rule of law, mentorship, and emerging practice areas, recently announcing his candidacy for LSK President ahead of the March 2026 elections.
Educational Background of Mwaura Kabata
Kabata’s academic qualifications cover core legal studies, professional training for admission to the Bar, and advanced programs in criminal justice and dispute resolution.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, where he undertook his foundational legal studies.
Later, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, a requirement for admission to the Bar in Kenya.

Mwaura was admitted as an advocate on 20 December 2016.
In addition to his local legal training, Kabata pursued advanced studies in International Criminal Justice at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
He also completed specialised training in International Dispute Resolution Mechanisms in The Hague, further strengthening his exposure to comparative legal systems and cross-border dispute processes.

Mwaura Kabata serves as the Vice President of the Law Society of Kenya and is a senior partner at Alakonya Law LLP, where he leads the Dispute Resolution Department.

Since his admission to the Bar on 20 December 2016, Kabata has held multiple leadership roles within the Law Society of Kenya, including serving as a committee member, general council member, and vice president.
He has been actively involved in public-interest litigation, notably representing cases arising from the Gen Z protests of 2024 and 2025.
Kabata’s career has focused on litigation, alternative dispute resolution, and institutional governance within the legal profession.
During his tenure at LSK, he has overseen financial growth, implemented digital systems such as the Judiciary Advocate Management System (JAMS), and introduced reforms to improve member welfare, including reduced practising certificate fees for young advocates and enhanced medical insurance coverage.
