Ikiara’s academic journey began at Gitoro Primary School, where she studied from 1966 to 1972 and earned her Certificate of Primary Education.
She then proceeded to St. Mary’s Girls’ Igoji in Meru, where she completed her East African Certificate of Education in 1976.

She began as a classroom teacher under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in 1981, where she later rose to the position of deputy headteacher, serving until 2010.
In 2010, she elevated her career when she was elected the first National Women Representative at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), a position she held until 2019.
During this time, she became an outspoken advocate for gender equality, better working conditions for teachers, and the recognition of women’s contributions in education.
From 2019 to 2022, she chaired the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KWTA), an organization that provided her a platform to champion mentorship, professional growth, and women’s empowerment across the country.
