Biography
Gideon Moi is the former senator for Baringo County and the Chairman of the KANU Party. He is the last-born child of Kenya’s second President Daniel Arap Moi.
Six years after his birth, his father became Kenya’s Vice President, a position that took a toll on the elder Moi’s marriage.
In 1974, when Gideon’s parents separated, his older siblings stayed with their mother, while he remained under his father’s care, fostering a special bond between them.
Gideon Moi Education
The former senator completed his high school education at St. Mary’s Secondary School, where he formed lasting friendships with classmates who later became prominent figures in various fields.
Some of the key figures include former President Uhuru Kenyatta, businessman Jimi Wanjigi, journalist Jeff Koinange, and former Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo.
Life in Politics
Driven by his father’s presidency and the political legacy he inherited; Gideon quickly moved from being the MP for Baringo Central, a position his father had held for 39 years to becoming a senator.
Additionally, he hoped to run for presidency in the 2022 General Election, before he dropped his bid and supported Azimio la Umoja One Kenya flagbearer Raila Odinga.
After briefly exploring other ventures, Gideon entered politics, securing his father’s parliamentary seat in the 2002 general election. However, he lost the Baringo Central MP’s seat in 2007 before being elected Baringo Senator.
The KANU Chairman has made major milestones, he led the party into a coalition agreement with Jubilee the ruling party.
As a result, the coalition agreement enabled President Kenyatta to displace several of Deputy President William Ruto’s allies from their leadership positions in the Senate.
In reciprocation, Uhuru picked West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio to replace Kipchumba Murkomen as Majority Leader.
