Biography
John Gachora is the Group Managing Director (MD) and CEO at NCBA Group.
John Gachora Education
Gachora attended Kamahindu Primary School before joining Alliance High. While at Alliance High School, he had an opportunity to join Brooks School Andover Massachusetts United States as a high school exchange visitor.
Mr. Gachora holds Bachelor of Science and master’s in engineering degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and an MBA degree from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA.
Experience
Mr. Gachora has several years of experience in executive management positions at various global companies in Corporate and Investment Banking, Structuring and Financial Engineering, Commercial Banking and Financial services.
He is a director of several other companies and previously served as a Managing Director at Bank of America Securities and as Managing Director, Corporate and Investment Banking at Barclays Africa prior to joining the NCBA Group.
John has also held several key positions, including Managing Director and Head of Corporate & Investment Banking at NIC, a role he took on after leaving Barclays Africa.
Prior to this, he held various executive roles at Absa Bank in South Africa, as well as positions at Bank of America and Credit Suisse First Boston in the United States.
He joined NIC Bank in September 2013 as Group Managing Director and was appointed to the Board on August 21, 2013.
Career Highlights
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic severely impacting businesses globally throughout most of 2020, the bank achieved a 115 percent increase in net operating profit and a 97 percent surge in operating income compared to the previous year, 2019.
Additionally, the bank recorded a profit of 2.2 billion Kenya shillings in 2019, which slightly increased to 2.4 billion in 2020 despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
