Joseph Ole Lenku is a Kenyan politician and the current Governor of Kajiado County and a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Early Life & Education
Joseph Jama Ole Lenku was born on 20 October 1970 in Lenkisim sub-location, Entonet location, within the Loitokitok Division of Kajiado County.
His upbringing reflected traditional Maasai life, herding livestock and participating in cultural rites, set against the backdrop of rural Kajiado.
His father, Lenku Ole Mpaa Kapei, was a senior chief of Kajiado South and a leading figure in the Iterito age-group, while his mother, Sentema Lenku, was similarly from a prominent Maasai lineage.
This dual heritage positioned him as a leading young voice within the Maasai community, often considered a successor to the late William Ole Ntimama.
Ole Lenku’s early education began at Lenkisim Primary School in 1979. Due to local challenges, he was transferred to Ilbisel Primary (1980–1981), Nkama Primary (1982–1983), and lastly to D.E.B. Loitokitok (1984–1986), where he excelled in the CPE exams.
In 1987, he advanced to Nakuru High School, completing his secondary education in 1990.
Though initially admitted to Kenyatta University, Ole Lenku chose to attend the Kenya Utalii College, where he earned a diploma in Hotel Management in 1995.
He later pursued higher studies at the University of Nairobi, obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and an MBA in Strategic Management in 2006.
Ole Lenku obtained certifications in Project Management from Greece’s OTE Academy and Corporate Governance from the Centre for Corporate Governance, Nairobi, while engaging in various leadership and public service workshops.
Career
Professional career
Ole Lenku began his professional career in 1996 at Serena Hotels Group, one of East Africa’s leading hotel chains.
He began in junior management positions but quickly demonstrated strong leadership and organizational skills, rising through the ranks to become General Manager.
During his time with Serena Hotels, Ole Lenku worked across multiple locations in both Kenya and Tanzania.
One of his most notable assignments was as General Manager of Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in Tanzania between 2001 and 2003, where he played a critical role in enhancing service delivery and operational efficiency.
In 2004, Ole Lenku returned to Kenya and joined the Kenya Utalii College, where he served as General Manager, a role he held till 2012.
In May 2013, shortly after President Uhuru Kenyatta assumed office, Ole Lenku was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.
The appointment was unexpected, given his background in hospitality rather than security.
His tenure was marked by efforts to improve police professionalism, strengthen coordination between national and county security agencies, and enhance community policing through the “Nyumba Kumi” initiative.
He was at the forefront of the government’s response to major security challenges, most notably the Westgate Mall terrorist attack in September 2013.
Despite criticism of the government’s handling of the attack, Ole Lenku pushed forward with reforms aimed at modernizing Kenya’s internal security structures. However, political pressure mounted, and in December 2014, he was replaced in a Cabinet reshuffle.

In June 2016, he was appointed Non-Executive Chairperson of the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), a position he held until 2019.
Political career
Ole Lenku ventured into elective politics ahead of the 2017 General Election, running on an ODM (Orange Democratic Movement) ticket.
He successfully contested the governorship of Kajiado County, defeating incumbent Dr. David ole Nkedianye.
His first term focused on key development areas, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and governance reforms.
His administration oversaw the construction of modern Early Childhood Development (ECD) classrooms, the drilling of solar-powered boreholes to improve water access, the expansion of county referral hospitals, and bursary programs for needy students.
In 2022, Ole Lenku sought re-election and won, securing a second term despite legal challenges from opponents.
The High Court upheld his victory in early 2023, dismissing the petition and affirming the credibility of the election.
