Biography
Millie Odhiambo is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suba North and the current minority whip in the National Assembly.
She is a vocal member of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) and a staunch supporter of Raila Amolo Odinga-the party leader.
Apart from politics, the legislature is a vocal advocate of women’s rights and served as the chairperson of Coalition of Violence against Women-Kenya in 1999.
Millie Odhiambo Education
Millie Odhiambo started her early education at St. Francis Girls Secondary School in 1981, where she earned her ‘O’ Level Certificate in 1984.
Subsequently, she attended Limuru Girls High School in 1986, where she completed her ‘A’ Levels.
Thereafter, Millie proceeded to the University of Nairobi, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from 1986 to 1990.
In 1991, the legislature received a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law.
Later, in 1997, she took part in a program on Democracy and Governance at the Les Aspin Center in Washington, D.C., and Marquette University in Wisconsin, USA.
Similarly, in 1998, Millie completed a course on Legal Prevention and Judicial Control of Corruption at IDLI in Rome, Italy.
Between the period 1997 to 1998, Odhiambo earned a Post Graduate Diploma in the Advanced International Course on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Sweden.
In 2000 and 2001, the individual pursued a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Public Service Law at New York University, USA.
Political Career and Key Achievements
After completing her law studies, Millie Odhiambo began her career at the Attorney General’s office. She soon shifted her focus from civil litigation to human rights law, specializing in issues concerning women and children.
Between 2000 and 2008, she was founder and director of the Cradle Children’s Foundation. The now defunct organization was working towards improving the rights of children in the Kenyan legal system.
In 2007, Odhiambo contested for the Mbita parliamentary seat, now called Suba North.
Thereafter, she was elected the Member of Parliament under the ODM party in 2013. She has since defended her seat as a no- nonsense and courageous leader.
