Biography
Rachel Ruto is the First Lady of Kenya and the wife to President William Ruto. She is a thought leader on the Environment and Climate Action, Financial inclusion and Women Empowerment.
The first lady is also the Founder and Patron of Mama Doing Good and a champion of Faith Diplomacy, Mental Health and Wellness.
Education Background
Rachel Ruto attended Likuyani Primary school in Kakamega, where she sat for her Certificate of Primary Education (CPE). Thereafter, she joined Butere Girls for her Secondary Education, completing both O-levels and A-levels in the same school.
Afterwards, she joined Kenyatta University to pursue a Bachelor of Education degree that would allow her to work as a secondary school teacher.
Mrs. Ruto furthered her education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), where she earned a Master of Arts in Development degree in 2011.
Rachel Ruto Career
Despite being trained as a teacher, Mrs. Ruto did not remain in the profession for long as she voluntarily resigned and transitioned into starting a tour business.
She served as the second lady between 2013 and 2022 during Ruto’s tenure as deputy president.
Achievements
In 2009, Her Excellency founded the Joyful Women Organization, an initiative aimed at financially empowering rural women.
Rachel has received numerous accolades, including the State Commendation of Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH). In 2014, she was also honored with an Honorary Fellowship for Women Empowerment by Binary University of Malaysia.
Her Excellency was appointed by the African Union Commission and the World Economic Forum as one of the high-level Champions of the AU Decade on Women Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion in 2021.
Prior to her public service roles, the First Lady was an entrepreneur in the travel, hospitality and agricultural industries. Her Excellency is passionate about mentoring young people, empowering women and is an avid cyclist.
