Prisca Bett Chemutai came into the national spotlight after she was identified as the mother of Abby Cherop Ruto, the daughter of Kenyan President William Ruto.
Bett and Ruto reportedly met in 2005, when she was a student at Moi University in Eldoret. At the time, Ruto was serving as the Member of Parliament for Eldoret North Constituency.
According to an affidavit Prisca Bett filed in court in February 2017, she was introduced to Ruto by a mutual friend while studying at the university.
She stated that Ruto later pursued her romantically, leading to a relationship between the two. Bett claimed that she eventually conceived during the relationship and later gave birth to their daughter.
Abby Cherop Ruto was born on March 6, 2006, at Mediheal Hospital in Uasin Gishu County. In the affidavit, Prisca Bett stated that she frequently spent weekends and nights with Ruto at his residence in Eldoret during the period of their relationship.

The court documents formed part of a legal case in which she sought child maintenance orders for their daughter.
Prisca Bett Child Support Case and Public Attention
In February 2017, Prisca Bett filed a lawsuit against Ruto, alleging that he had failed to adequately support their daughter.
She further claimed that he had abandoned both her and the child after the pregnancy. The case attracted significant public attention due to Ruto’s prominent position in Kenyan politics.
Ruto publicly acknowledged that Abby was his daughter but denied claims that he had neglected her.
He stated that he had been providing financial support for the child, including a monthly upkeep contribution of Sh40,000.

Additionally, he confirmed that he had paid for Abby’s education at Greenvale School, a private boarding institution in Uasin Gishu County.
The dispute was eventually resolved out of court, bringing an end to the legal proceedings. Despite the public controversy surrounding the case, attention later shifted to Abby’s academic achievements.
In 2024, Abby Cherop Ruto emerged as one of Kenya’s top KCPE candidates after scoring 406 marks in the national examination.
