The 2024 Jim Heather-Hayes Memorial Rally came to a thrilling conclusion in the picturesque landscapes of Laikipia, leaving fans, drivers, and the motorsport community with a blend of triumph, nostalgia, and emotional moments. With over 50 cars roaring through the rugged terrain, this year’s rally celebrated Jim Heather-Hayes’s enduring legacy while showcasing the grit and skill of Kenya’s rally drivers.

Baldev Chager’s Bittersweet Victory

Emerging as the overall winner was Baldev Singh Chager, who, alongside co-driver Gareth Dawe, piloted the Porsche 911 for Kabras Sugar Racing to an impressive finish time of 8:01:56.2. While the victory was a testament to his team’s meticulous preparation and unwavering focus, the celebration was subdued for Baldev, who received news of his uncle Ranjit Singh Chager’s passing during the event.

Chager reflected on his achievement with mixed emotions:
“This win is dedicated to my team’s hard work and preparation. The terrain was challenging—a mix of rocky, fast, and technical sections that demanded consistency and focus. But it’s bittersweet for me, given the loss of my uncle. It was an amazing rally, with over 50 entries proving the passion people have for motorsport.”

Baldev’s triumph also highlighted his deep familial ties to rallying. As a second-generation driver, he carries forward a family legacy rooted in Kenya’s motorsport history. His father, Daljit, and uncles Ranjit and Manori were all prominent figures in track and rally racing, underscoring the Chager family’s influence on the sport.

The Final Standings

While Chager claimed the top spot, the podium was shared by formidable competitors:
