The Kenya School of Law (KSL) has officially opened applications for the 2026/2027 academic year of its Advocates Training Programme (ATP).
According to Dr. Henry K. Mutai, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the KSL, the program will commence on February 9, 2026, with a deadline for applications of October 31, 2025.
The ATP is a statutory postgraduate legal training program that combines academic learning with practical legal skills and ethical instruction, preparing law graduates for admission to the Kenyan Bar.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
KSL outlined a detailed eligibility framework tailored to different categories of applicants, depending on when and where they obtained their LL.B. degrees.
- Applicants Admitted to LL.B. After December 8, 2014
Kenyan University Graduates must:
- Have scored at least a B (plain) in English or Kiswahili and a C+ (plus) mean grade in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent.
- Have achieved two principal passes and one subsidiary pass in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE), totaling a minimum of 10 points.
- Have passed all 16 core law subjects as listed in the Second Schedule to the Legal Education Act, Cap. 16B.
- Hold or be eligible for conferment of an LL.B. degree from a recognized Kenyan university.
Foreign University Graduates must:
- Meet the same KCSE or equivalent secondary school requirements as Kenyan graduates.
- Have passed the 16 core law subjects as required under Kenyan law.
- Hold or be eligible for conferment of an LL.B. from a recognized foreign university.
- Obtain clearance from the Council of Legal Education (CLE).
- Sit and pass the Pre-Bar Examination as stipulated under the Kenya School of Law Act, Cap. 16C.
All applicants with non-KNEC (Kenya National Examinations Council) secondary school qualifications must seek formal evaluation of their results from a legally authorized body in Kenya.

Eligible Candidates
These applicants are eligible under one of the following conditions:
Hold or are eligible for conferment of an LL.B from a recognized Kenyan university, or;
Hold a degree from a foreign institution recognized by CLE, having met the minimum university entry requirements and a B (plain) in English and a C+ (plus) mean grade in KCSE, or;
Have a C+ in English and a C (plain) mean grade in KCSE, and possess a higher qualification (e.g., another undergraduate or postgraduate degree), or;
Have a C– (minus) in English and a C– (minus) overall in KCSE and pass the Pre-Bar Examination administered by KSL.
Required Documents and Application Process
All applications must be submitted online through the KSL website: www.ksl.ac.ke. Applicants must upload the following documents:
- B degree certificate or an official letter of eligibility for conferment
- Academic transcripts for all four years of law school (provisional transcripts must show completion)
- KCSE or equivalent secondary school certificates
- National ID or a valid passport
- Recent passport-size color photograph
- Proof of application fee payment (Ksh. 2,000)
- CLE clearance letter (for foreign graduates)
- Letter of equation (for non-KNEC qualifications)
- Admission letter to the LL.B program

Only fully completed applications received by October 31, 2025, will be considered.
Pre-Bar Examination Also Open
In addition to the ATP applications, KSL has invited eligible candidates to apply for the Pre-Bar Examination, which is scheduled to begin on January 12, 2026.
Applications for the Pre-Bar must be submitted by December 12, 2025.
The Pre-Bar is mandatory for applicants holding foreign LL.B degrees or those who do not fully meet KCSE requirements.
It assesses foundational understanding of Kenya’s legal and constitutional framework before formal training in the ATP.
