The National Police Service (NPS) has disclosed the names of police officers who were interdicted at the Central Police Station over the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang.
The list was released on the evening of Monday, June 9, 2025, following public uproar led by the Law Society of Kenya, which demanded that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja reveal the names of those officers.
LSK President contended that withholding these names undermines public trust and accountability, describing Kanja’s announcement as insufficient.
The police officers whose names have been disclosed include Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Taalam, Duty Officer Samuel Nganga, Corporal Charles Muriuki, Police Constables Debian Lusweti, Cell Central Peter Kimani, and Report Office Personnel Evaline Kanyiri.

At the same time, the LSK also called for the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate and ensure justice, while demanding that Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat recuse himself from influencing the investigation due to his involvement in the defamation complaint that led to Ojwang’s arrest.
“To ascertain this we equally call upon the Deputy Inspector General to publicly and unconditionally recuse himself from taking part in influencing the investigations in any way safe for as it may be required of him as a potential witness,” said the LSK President.

The death of Albert Ojwang has received widespread condemnation from civil society groups, political leaders, and a section of Kenyans, with others calling for the resignation of DIG Eliud Lagat.
Leaders Call for The Resignation of DIG
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called for the immediate suspension of Eliud Lagat.
“The Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr. Eliud Lagat is the complainant, and the one who ordered the arrest in the alleged ‘crime’ that Ojwang committed was making a fair comment on his social media account on Mr. Eliud Lagat. He must take full responsibility for this murder.
Suspending junior officers at Central Police Station is hoodwinking Kenyans. For any meaningful investigations to be done, Mr. Eliud Lagat must be suspended immediately,” Gachagua stated.
Lawyer Willis Otieno called for the resignation of the DIG.
“The focus must now be on Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat: he must resign and be charged over the killing of Albert Ojwang in police custody. A force under his command is implicated in this crime. His continued stay in office is an insult to justice,” Otieno said.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula condemned the circumstances under which Albert Ojwang died, calling for a thorough probe from relevant authorities investigating Albert’s death.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights poked holes in the police theory that Albert Ojwang committed suicide.
“The Commission strongly condemns the premature police narrative. These statements by police were issued even before any independent forensic investigations were carried out, a move that undermines public trust,” said KNCHR.
