The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released a five-day weather forecast for the period between March 1 to March 5, 2025, days after issuing directives to Kenyans regarding high temperatures.
Kenya Met announced that sunny, dry and hot weather conditions are mainly expected to prevail over most parts of the country.
Maximum temperatures are expected to be high (more than 30°C) over most parts of the country except some areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley where temperatures are expected to be below 30 °C.
The weatherman in the outlook said that in areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, sunny intervals are expected to prevail during the forecast period.
Other counties within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley include Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.

However, a few areas may experience occasional light rainfall around Mt. Kenya and Aberdares areas, the Coast and Southeastern lowlands, especially in the afternoons.
Mornings are expected to remain sunny with scattered clouds, while nights are expected to be partly cloudy.
Kenya Met warned that the maximum average daytime temperatures will exceed 31°C while night temperatures will fall as low as 7°C minimum.
Daytime sunny intervals accompanied by scattered clouds are, on the other hand, expected to prevail throughout the week in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley region.
This region covers the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The areas are, however, likely to experience partly cloudy nights throughout the forecast period.
The average minimum night-time temperature will be as low as 11°C with daytime temperatures expected to rise up to 34°C.
In the South-eastern lowlands covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta counties as well as the inland parts of Tana-River County, Kenya Met predicts that the regions are expected to experience mainly sunny intervals accompanied by scattered clouds in the mornings.
Chances of light rains over few areas (Taita Taveta) are expected in the afternoons while nights will remain partly cloudy.
Other regions
The Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as the coastal parts of Tana River are expected to experience daylong sunny intervals.
Kenya Met said that some areas will experience light morning showers towards the end of the forecast period. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy.
The average maximum daytime temperatures are expected to rise up to 36°C while minimum night-time temperature will be as low as 23°C.
At the same time, Kenya Met said that sunny conditions are expected during the day in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana and Samburu counties while skies are likely to remain clear during the night.
The weatherman warned that the maximum average daytime temperatures in these counties will exceed 38°C.
Strong Southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are also expected in parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.
The forecast comes after Kenya Met earlier in the week issued five directives to Kenyans in its weather forecast for the week of February 25 to March 3, regarding rise in temperatures.
The weatherman advised Kenyans to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and to limit outdoor activities especially during the peak heat hours (10 AM – 4 PM).
Kenyans were further directed to dress light by wearing loose and breathable clothing, keep indoors cool and all ventilate rooms, and check on vulnerable groups who need extra care including the elderly, children, and those with health conditions.

Long rains
Meanwhile, KMD has announced that the onset of the long rains season expected in the month of March could come earlier than anticipated.
The Weatherman is attributing the early onset in some parts of the country to a system known as the Madden Julianne Oscillation (MJO).
KMD Director Dr. David Gikungu says that MJO will be in phase two from the second week of March “and is likely to lead to an earlier than anticipated onset over some parts of the country”.
MJO is a band of rain-bearing clouds that move across the tropical oceans and bring rainfall to the country.
The effect is usually felt beginning in the second phase of the band, expected in the second week of March, leading to an earlier onset to the season than the anticipated onset over some parts of the country.
