Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has made a notable appearance at a high-profile event attended by President William Ruto, just a day after she issued a strongly worded statement casting doubt on the sincerity of opposition leaders led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Mwangaza was among the guests recognised at the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day held at the Meru ASK Showground on Saturday, June 21.
The event was presided over by President Ruto alongside Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and brought together several leaders and stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
The former Governor’s presence was acknowledged by North Imenti Member of Parliament (MP) Rahim Dawood as he invited Meru lawmakers to address the gathering.
“May all the MPs come on board. I want to recognise the former Governor, Hon Kawira—please stand,” Dawood said amid cheers from the crowd. “The former First Gentleman, please also stand,” he added, referring to Mwangaza’s husband, Murega Baichu.
The former governor’s attendance came amid renewed efforts by a political faction led by former DP Gachagua to bring her into their fold, especially following her impeachment earlier this year.

Gachagua woos Mwangaza to join the opposition team
Speaking during a late-night interview with local Meru radio stations on Friday, Gachagua, who is also in Meru County together with other opposition leaders for a weekend tour, opened up about his private communication with Mwangaza during her political troubles.
He revealed that he had offered her counsel and support during her turbulent tenure and advised her to reconsider her political approach.
“Don’t walk alone; you will go nowhere,” said Gachagua, drawing an analogy with buffaloes who move in herds not out of love but survival.
“Buffaloes don’t move together in a herd because they love one another; they move together because of the dangers of walking alone.”
He further encouraged Mwangaza to align herself with like-minded leaders, urging her to consider working alongside former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, former Meru Governor Peter Munya, and himself.
The former DP reminded her that they are not enemies, noting that they have a common enemy and that they should not waste their energy fighting one another but instead unite and direct their efforts against the shared adversary.
“Don’t walk alone; I know you are hurting, and you are in tears. You have brothers and sisters you can work with. If you work alone, you will not get far. Let’s sort after each other, Peter Munya, our brother Mithika Linturi and Kawira Mwangaza. I am also there; let us walk together for the sake of our people because Kawira cannot be my enemy, and Kawira cannot be the enemy of Linturi or Munya. Mt Kenya people, we know our enemy. Let’s not lose energy fighting each other,” He added.
Gachagua also warned the government against interfering with Mwangaza’s community programmes, citing a recent incident where her meetings were disrupted and police lobbed teargas.
Former Governor throws tough questions at opposition leaders ahead of Meru tour
This came after Mwangaza issued a blistering statement casting doubt on the sincerity of opposition leaders ahead of their tour.

In a statement shared on her social media platforms, the former Governor demanded answers over their past silence during the process that led to her removal from office.
She said the same individuals allegedly inviting her to join their political alliance were once behind what she termed as “sabotage of a democratically elected governor.”
Mwangaza was impeached by the Senate on August 2, 2024, and the High Court upheld her ouster on March 14, 2025 before her former deputy, Isaac Mutuma, subsequently assumed office.
“They have reached out to me, sent emissaries, and even called me,” Mwangaza revealed, without naming anyone.
“Before responding to their invitations, I demand the answer: was it justice to overthrow the people’s will?”
She also directed criticism at national opposition leaders expected to accompany Munya and Linturi during their visit to Meru.
The two are accompanying Gachagua alongside Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders for various political engagements on Saturday.
“To the opposition leaders joining them from other regions — where was your voice when a woman leader, democratically elected, was vilified and harassed by the very people you are now in alliance with?” she posed.
