A Machakos Court has sentenced activist Boniface Mwangi to two months in jail for making comments against Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua in contempt of court.
However, the court gave the activist an alternative of paying Ksh300,000 fine.
In a statement, Mwangi confirmed his sentencing noting that he could no longer comment about the case and that the orders retrained him from making such comments until January 2024.
“I have been found guilty of contempt of court. Sentenced to two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh 300,000,” Mwangi stated.
“I can no longer post who bombed our home. Water is wet, the pope is Catholic, and everyone knows who bombed our home.”
In a subsequent statement, Mwangi revealed that he was waiting for the processing of his fine at the Machakos-based Law Courts.
His sentencing came months after a court battle pitting him against the former Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua.
At the center of Mwangi’s woes is a statement linking Governor Mutua to an incident related to his house in Athi River, Machakos County dating back to 2021.

In retaliation, Mutua, who was then serving as Machakos Governor, through his lawyer Harrisson Kinyanjui sued Mwangi for what he called publishing of defamatory information.
Subsequently, the Machakos High Court barred Mwangi from publishing information against the governor pending determination of the case.
However, the activist was adamant that his allegations were based on concrete evidence and maintained his stance.
On October 16, the Machakos-based court ruled that Mwangi was guilty of contempt of court and consequently ordered him to appear on November 1 for sentencing.

“The court has found you in contempt of court and directed that you appear in person to show cause why you should not be sent to civil jail,” the judge ruled.
On Wednesday, November 1, Mwangi arrived in the company of prominent activists among them former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and NARC Kenya Party Leader Boniface Mwangi.
In posts shared earlier in the day, the activist announced that Karua and the other activists had arrived to stand in solidarity with him ahead of his sentencing.
Also present ahead of his appearance was musician Juliani.
