Bonney Tunya, a Kenyan journalist, has been appointed as Head of Communication and Public Information at the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
Bonney Tunya will take on the senior communications leadership role from May 2026 at one of Africa’s key public health institutions, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Tunya holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from United States International University (USIU) Africa.
In his career, he has practised in both local media houses, including Standard Group (KTN), and international media houses, including BBC and CNBC.

Before joining Africa CDC, Tunya served as Head of Communications at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT from June 2025 to February 2026, based in Nairobi.

He led implementation of the organization’s Africa communications strategy and worked to position the institution as a trusted authority on sustainable food systems research and agricultural biodiversity.
His responsibilities included coordinating communications teams handling publications, brand and graphic design, digital communications, internal communications, and media outreach.
Between February 2025 and June 2025, he worked as a Consultant Media Trainer with Thomson Reuters Foundation. In his role, he focused on strengthening the capacities of African media houses and journalists through innovative storytelling techniques.
Alongside his professional communications work, Tunya co-founded the Lulu Memorial Library in Kisumu County in July 2023 and served in the role until May 2025.
From August 2023 to December 2024, Tunya also worked as an In-Country Marketing and Communications Specialist for Innovate UK Business Connect in Kenya.
Tunya has built his reputation in journalism and broadcasting across several major media organizations. He spent more than five years at BBC News in Nairobi, where he served as Editor for Co-productions and Senior Broadcast Journalist. During his time at the BBC, he helped lead television and digital news production targeting Kenyan and wider African audiences.
He also worked at CNBC Africa, anchoring business and markets coverage across Johannesburg, Kigali, and Nairobi. His reporting focused on African economies, financial markets, and corporate developments across the continent.

He also served as a Business News Anchor at Standard Group PLC (KTN), strengthening his experience in business journalism and economic reporting.
Tunya’s Role at Africa CDC and Communications Leadership
At Africa CDC, Tunya joins the Directorate of Communication and Public Information, a core unit responsible for shaping how the institution communicates public health information across member states of the African Union.
According to Africa CDC’s communication framework, the directorate manages media relations, public engagement, and dissemination of health information during outbreaks and routine health programmes.
