China Donates Ksh 360M Worth Food for Families in Kenya

The People’s Republic of China has donated Ksh360 million worth of food for Kenyan families, transported in 88 containers to the Embakasi container depot.

China has explained that the food was donated to help desperate families in Kenya affected by natural disasters.

Additionally, the 88 containers that were used to transport the food has been donated to Kenya to help displaced families across the country.

“Kenyan Government has received a consignment of 2,040 metric tonnes of rice from the People’s Republic of China on 12th July 2024. ”

“The rice worth RMB 20 million Yuan (KES 360 million) was donated to Kenya to boost food security after serious drought and flood in Kenya in recent months. The 88 containers transporting the rice have also been donated for use as shelters for displaced families,” a statement from the Chinese Embassy in Kenya read in part.

China Boasts of Good Relations and Past Donations

At the same time, the embassy noted that the donations were presented to the Ministry of East African Community, the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and Regional Development

Further, the statement detailed that China has a genuine and sincere relationship with Kenya, highlighting past food donations made since 2019.

“The support and assistance that China and Kenya offer to each other are sincere and genuine.

“This is not the first time China has extended a helping hand to Kenya. Between 2019 and 2021, China provided Kenya with Emergency Food Aid of 11,835 tonnes of white rice, amounting to RMB 80 million yuan, shipped to Kenya in eight batches,” added the statement. 

“The donation, which arrived in two ships, was handed over by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya to the Ministry of East African Community, the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) &Regional Development at the Inland Container Depot in Embakasi, Nairobi,” noted the statement.

New SGR Coaches Arrive in Kenya

At the same time, China sent four new luxury Standard Gauge Railway coaches to Kenya on Monday, July 15, earlier procured by the government of Kenya. 

The Kenya Railways Corporation confirmed the arrival of the new coaches alongside four first-class, ten economy coaches, a dining car and a power car, improving SGR services before Nairobi and Mombasa.

Also, KRC stated that the coaches will offer fully reclining convertible seats for passenger comfort and allow for the configuration on Premium Class will allow passengers to face the direction of their choice while travelling.

The planned introduction of Premium Class comes months after KRC implemented an upward adjustment of its fairs raising the cost of an economy seat between Nairobi and Mombasa from Ksh1,000 to Ksh500.
