Residents of Mathare North Area 2 and Huruma have expressed growing concerns after discovering multiple unidentified bodies in the Mathare River.
The alarm was raised after Kazi Mtaani workers recovered two bodies near the Mathare-Huruma bridge on consecutive days on Tuesday, November 26.
According to locals, the discoveries were made in the section of the river that flows between Huruma and Mathare North.
Distressed, several residents and users online have shared their concerns. So far, three unknown bodies have been retrieved from the river.
“We don’t know how many bodies are here, but we are worried. Two bodies were retrieved around 2 PM yesterday by Kazi Mtaani workers, but nothing has been done so far,” said X user Omuga Bash.

Previous Incidences of Bodies in Mathare River
This is not the first such incident, raising fears among residents about possible foul play or deeper issues linked to crime or negligence in the area.
The community is now calling on the government and relevant authorities to urgently investigate the situation, identify the bodies, and ensure a thorough search for any more remains.
“This is deeply unsettling. We need the government to help us find out who these people are and whether there are more bodies in the river,” added Omuga Bash.
On October 9, two female bodies were recovered from the river, following an initiative to restore the Nairobi River. Mathare residents raised an alarm, calling on the government to take action.
They feared that there were bodies in the River, saying that the women may have been washed away when the river broke its banks during floods that occurred earlier in the year.
