The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided a fresh update on investigations into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo, confirming that a total of 28 individuals have so far recorded statements, among them National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 21, DCI said the inquiry into the December 13, 2025, accident at Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway is ongoing and will be concluded before the file is forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate action.
According to the investigators, the probe has been “wide-ranging and comprehensive,” addressing issues raised both publicly and through formal investigative channels. Detectives have analysed information from multiple sources, including witness accounts, forensic findings and scene evidence.

The agency confirmed that seven passengers who were aboard the bus involved in the crash voluntarily presented themselves and recorded statements to assist the investigation.
“Others include Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, who voluntarily recorded his statement in the early stages of the investigation,” the DCI said, adding that statements were also taken from Eunice Chelagat, wife of Vihiga Senator George Khaniri, and a further account from Senator Khaniri himself, described as a close friend of the late Jirongo.

DCI noted that Senator Khaniri and his wife visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and played a role in facilitating the transfer of Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
Investigators also disclosed the findings of a post-mortem examination conducted on Jirongo’s body. The autopsy established that he sustained severe crush chest injuries, a broken sternum, and lacerations to vital organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys.
“Additionally, autopsy on the deceased body established among other findings that the deceased had crush chest injuries, broken sternum with lacerations on the heart, liver and Kidneys. The pathologist opined that the cause of death was multiple crush injuries due to blunt force trauma.”
Initial update
While reiterating its commitment to impartial and expeditious investigations, DCI urged restraint from politicians, media outlets and members of the public, warning against speculation that could prejudice the probe or unfairly damage the reputations of individuals who have cooperated with investigators.
This follows an earlier statement issued on January 5, in which the directorate outlined initial findings and confirmed that the incident appeared to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play at that stage.

In the January 5 briefing, investigators revealed that a multi-agency team comprising homicide detectives, forensic experts and intelligence officers had processed the scene, recovered CCTV footage from nearby premises, analysed the bus manifest and reviewed amateur videos captured at the scene.
Statements had also been recorded from key witnesses, including Jirongo’s widow Ann Lanoi Pertet, the bus driver and conductor, staff from a nearby petrol station, and individuals who interacted with the deceased hours before the accident.
DCI said investigations are now in their final stages, and once concluded, the inquiry file will be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which will determine whether any charges, including possible traffic-related offences, will be preferred.
