Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has promised to replace a vehicle belonging to Steven Otieno, a Kisumu taxi driver who lost his car and sustained serious injuries during violence in Homa Bay.

Sifuna made the commitment on September 19, 2026, after a report detailed Otieno’s struggles following the incident during a Linda Mwananchi political mobilization in Homa Bay.

“I have read this story in today’s Standard. We will replace your vehicle, Steven. The Linda Mwananchi team will be in touch,” Sifuna noted.

Taxi Driver Caught in Homa Bay Violence

Steven Otieno is from Nyalenda in Kisumu and traveled to Homa Bay while working as a taxi driver.

According to Steve, he was hired to transport Abigael Gikonyo, famously known as Abbie Zuena, a mobilizer associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, on August 16.

Steven picked Zuena up in Kisumu before traveling to Homa Bay with other members of the group.

However, violence broke out as the group was in the area, with Otieno explaining that they were confronted by youths armed with machetes and clubs.

The group sought refuge at a nearby church, but Otieno confirmed that the attackers followed them into the compound.

Following the attack, the driver sustained several injuries, including deep cuts to his face, back, hands, and feet, as well as a fractured arm.

He later lost consciousness and was taken to hospital for treatment.

After initial treatment, Otieno was transferred to Nightingale Hospital in Kisumu, where he continued to receive medical care before being discharged.

In addition, during the violence, Steve’s Subaru Legacy was also destroyed and torched.

Otieno clarified that the vehicle did not belong to him but to a young widow who had entrusted it to him so he could earn a living and support his family.

Linda Mwananchi on Assisting Steven

After leaving the hospital, Otieno contacted Zuena to discuss his medical condition and the destroyed vehicle, seeking assistance to rebuild his livelihood, including support in obtaining another vehicle.

“I was promised that after being discharged from hospital, I would be assisted with some money so that I could get another vehicle and continue with my life, but up to now nothing has happened,” Steven Otieno explained during an interview with the Standard.

Zuena, however, disputed responsibility for replacing the car after assisting Otieno with medical treatment.

According to Zuena, the vehicle was uninsured, and any dispute concerning its ownership or compensation should have been handled through the appropriate legal channels.

On September 19, Abigael Gikonyo addressed the political rallies’ damages, noting that the Homa Bay event left most people dealing with mental, financial, and physical trauma.

“As people move on so fast from Homa Bay, most of us are still dealing with the horrors of what Homa Bay has done to us, mentally, financially, and through the physical trauma we experienced. Today, whenever we plan rallies, car owners hesitate because the question is simple: will their car come back in one piece?” Abigael stated.

Police on Edwin Sifuna’s Rally

According to the National Police Service, six vehicles were torched and at least 46 people were injured during Linda Mwananchi’s rally led by Edwin Sifuna in Homa Bay.

The police also arrested several suspects in connection with the chaos.

Further, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) summoned Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma over statements he made on the eve of the rally.
