Olympic gold medals are the ultimate measure of sporting greatness, and no Kenyan has won more than Faith Kipyegon.
Her three Olympic titles place her above five other Kenyan legends who have each captured two gold medals on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
This article looks at the six Kenyan athletes who have won the most Olympic gold medals and the achievements that secured their place among the country’s greatest sporting icons.
Faith Kipyegon (3 Gold Medals)
Faith Kipyegon is Kenya’s most successful Olympic gold medal winner. She claimed her first Olympic title in the women’s 1,500m at Rio 2016 before successfully defending it at Tokyo 2020.
She completed a historic hat-trick at Paris 2024, becoming the first woman to win three consecutive Olympic 1,500m titles.
Kipyegon also won a silver medal in the women’s 5,000m at Paris, further adding to her Olympic record.
Kipchoge Keino (2 Gold Medals)
Kipchoge Keino is widely regarded as the pioneer of Kenya’s success in international athletics.
He won his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 1,500m at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, producing one of the most celebrated performances in Olympic history.
Four years later, he added a second gold medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 1972 Munich Games.
Beyond his two gold medals, Keino also won Olympic silver medals in the 5,000m (1968) and 1,500m (1972), as well as a silver in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 1968 Olympics.

His achievements helped establish Kenya as a global athletics powerhouse and inspired generations of runners who followed in his footsteps.
Eliud Kipchoge (2 Gold Medals)
Eliud Kipchoge is widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time.
He won Olympic gold in the marathon at the Rio 2016 Games and successfully defended his title at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, becoming only the third man in history to win back-to-back Olympic marathon gold medals.
Before switching to the marathon, Kipchoge enjoyed a highly successful track career.
He won the 5,000m world title at the 2003 World Championships in Paris and collected silver and bronze medals at subsequent Olympic Games and World Championships.
In the marathon, he dominated the sport for nearly a decade, winning multiple World Marathon Majors and setting a world record of 2:01:09 in Berlin in 2022.
Kipchoge also made history in 2019 when he became the first person to run the marathon distance in under two hours, clocking 1:59:40 during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna.
While the mark was not eligible as an official world record because it was achieved under controlled conditions, it remains one of the greatest feats in athletics history.
Ezekiel Kemboi (2 Gold Medals)
Ezekiel Kemboi is one of the most successful steeplechasers in athletics history and a central figure in Kenya’s dominance of the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.
He won his first Olympic gold medal at the Athens 2004 Games before reclaiming the title eight years later at the London 2012 Olympics.
Kemboi also enjoyed remarkable success at the World Championships, where he won four world titles in the 3,000m steeplechase.

His consistency over more than a decade made him one of the greatest athletes ever produced by Kenya.
Known for his trademark victory dance, Kemboi became one of the sport’s most recognizable personalities.
Unlike some athletes on this list, Kemboi did not hold an individual world record, but his longevity and championship record place him among the greatest steeplechasers in history.
David Rudisha (2 Gold Medals)
David Rudisha is widely regarded as the greatest 800m runner in history.
The Kenyan middle-distance star won Olympic gold at the London 2012 Games and successfully defended his title at Rio 2016, becoming the first man since New Zealand’s Peter Snell in 1964 to retain the Olympic 800m crown.
Rudisha’s finest moment came in the London 2012 Olympic final when he shattered his own world record, clocking 1:40.91 in what is widely considered the greatest 800m race ever run.
Remarkably, every athlete in the race achieved a season’s best, personal best or national record.
In addition to his Olympic success, Rudisha won back-to-back world titles in 2011 and 2015 and dominated the event for much of the early 2010s.
His world record of 1:40.91 remains one of the most iconic marks in athletics history.
Beatrice Chebet (2 Gold Medals)
Beatrice Chebet became the latest athlete to join Kenya’s elite group of double Olympic gold medalists after a spectacular performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
She won the women’s 5,000m title before completing the long-distance double by claiming gold in the 10,000m just days later.
Her achievements made her the first Kenyan woman to win Olympic gold in the 10,000m.
In May 2024, she broke the women’s 10,000m world record with a time of 28:54.14, becoming the first woman ever to run under 29 minutes for the distance.
The Kenyan star also made history by becoming only the third woman to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the same Olympic Games, joining Ethiopian legend Tirunesh Dibaba and Dutch star Sifan Hassan.
