A family from Kamhinda Village in Siaya County are in shock after discovering their dead baby’s body missing from the grave 10 days after being buried.

Joseph Ochieng Origi, father of the infant, lost his newborn son on May 28 hours after his wife delivered.

The baby had only survived 3 hours after birth when he suffered breathing complications before succumbing, at the at Siaya County Referral Hospital.

Joseph stated that they had buried their son within his compound but upon waking up one morning they found the grave wide open and the body missing.

“We carried the body and buried it within my compound but on Friday we woke up to find his grave wide open and the body missing,” he said.

Origi expressed that the bizarre ordeal has created panic and confusion in the family adding that they had started healing from the loss of their child before the incident.

“We were beginning to heal because that is all we could do. However, someone coming to carry the corpse at night is something that has sent chills down our spines,” Mr. Origi expressed.

Family Says Motive Behind the Theft Unknown

Joseph confessed that they were yet to establish the motive behind the theft which has left them on edge.

He added that the scariest part was that the body was carried away naked. According to Joseph, the perpetrator undressed the baby’s body and left everything behind including his socks.

“It’s a nightmare, everything that the baby wore was left behind including his socks,” Origi provided.

The spine-chilling matter was reported to the Mwer police post and detectives have launched an investigation.

Speaking on the same note, Mzee Christopher Awuondo shared that in the Luo community, a grave was very significant for people who also believed in the living dead.

“The presence of that grave within the homestead is significant because it’s a constant reminder to the living that once upon a time their kin lived in them,” Mzee Christopher said.

The family and the Kamhinda village have been left at a state of shock as they await answers as to who may have stolen the baby’s body and the motive behind the move.
