The form one selection for the 2023 KCPE candidates have once again revealed how students prefer specific high schools in the country.
According to the Ministry of Education, more than one million candidates who sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) will know the secondary schools they will be joining in January 2024.

Notably 1,400,329 students out of the 1,406, 557 who sat the KCPE examination secured placements in various high schools across the nation.
Of the selected students, Machogu announced on Monday, 717,358 are boys and 682,971 are girls.

Likewise, among them, 42,927 have been placed in national schools with 22,051 being boys while the girls were 20,876.
The Education CS, while presiding over the 2024 Form One placement at Lenana School on Monday December 18, said the exercise was done according to candidate’s choices and other criteria.

“Some students were placed in schools of equivalent standing outside their counties. This includes those from counties with inadequate capacity,” Machogu stated.

According to the Ministry of Education most female students chose at least 5 top performing schools across the Country.

On the other hand, their male counterparts chose at least five schools all distributed across the region.
Likewise, according to the report, the top ten most requested schools included Kabianga, Nanyuki, Pangani, Kapsabet, Alliance Girls,
Similarly, Maseno school in Kisumu County was among the top requested schools by male students while others included Nakuru high school, Butere Girls, Mangu and Alliance High.
According from data by the Ministry, Kabianga High School was the most requested institution, chosen by 186,357 students despite having a capacity of only 672.
The second school was Nanyuki High School in Laikipia County with 158,741 applications competing for its limited 480 slots.
Similarly, Nairobi’s Pangani girls came third with 144,542 requests against its capacity of 384 students.
On the other hand, Kapsabet Boys in Nandi County, was the fourth most chosen institution by 143,723 students which has a capacity of 432.
Maseno School in Kisumu County, emerged sixth with 123,777 applcants.
Likewise, Nakuru High School in Nakuru County, came seventh with a capacity of 480 against 115,513 requestions.
On the other hand, Butere Girls in Kakamega County with a capacity of 480 students followed closely in eighth place, chosen by 114,635 students.
Mangu High School in Kiambu County, with a capacity of 480, was selected by 112,938 students, securing the ninth position.
The prestigious Alliance High School came tenth as the most preferred by 110,839 students yet it has a capacity of 384.
Education Plans ahead
At the time of releasing the Form one placement, CS Machogu further asked Regional Directors of Education and County Education Directors to ensure that principals of secondary schools don’t impose additional levies on parents beyond the limit.
“The Constitution obligate the government to provide free and compulsory education, additional levies deny children of poor parents access to education,” said Machogu.

On the other hand, the selection placement at Lenana School also saw Principal Secretary for Basic Education Belio Kipsang who was present at the event highlight the ongoing plan to expedite first-term capitation payments for school reopening in January 2024.
“We’re working with treasury to release capitation for schools, let’s ensure that we are following regulations on fees, let’s be careful on communication, let’s live within framework that’s been given. Let’s not be in conflict with guidelines from the ministry,” said Belio.
