A former Chief Justice is in mourning following the death of his son, Athman.
In a statement, journalist Kwamtchesi Makoha broke the news, stating that Athman, Willy Mutunga’s son, passed away at Coptic Hospital.

“Condolences to CJ Emeritus Willy Mutunga on the passing of his son Athman, 50, at Coptic Hospital on Saturday, October 12,” part of the statement read.
According to the journalist, Athman will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 13 at 4.00 p.m. in Kitui county in line with the Muslim rites.

Kenyans send condolence messages to Willy Mutunga
It is reported that the son of the former Chief Justice had undergone four surgeries in two months, and the doctors were confident that Athman would recover but that was not to be.
The cause of the illness that led to the surgeries has not been disclosed by the family.

Following the announcement of his death, Kenyans have expressed their condolences to Chief Justice Emeritus Mutunga on various social media platforms.
Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official Roselyne Akombe, through her X account, offered her condolences to the former CJ, saying, “Sorry for the loss of your son. May Allah comfort you and give you strength during these tough times.”

A childhood friend of Athman, Jacklyn Juma, also shared her condolences on X, writing, “Really sad news, rest in peace, my childhood friend and brother Mbuti. Poleni sana Willy Mutunga and Shamilla Mutunga. May the Lord comfort you all.”
Activist Al Amin Kimathi a friend of the former Chief Justice also posted his condolences on X writing “May Allah give you the wherewithal to bear this immense loss. May He admit Athman to Janah. Ameen.”
About Former Chief Justice
Willy Mutunga was Kenya’s first Chief Justice after the promulgation of the new constitution.
He served as the CJ from June 20, 2011, to June 16, 2016.
During his tenure, he was instrumental in implementing judicial reforms and reducing case backlogs in the Kenyan judiciary.
