President William Ruto has returned to the restive Mt. Kenya region to address the growing discontent following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Ruto’s visit to Laikipia on Saturday, November 10 is his first to the Mt. Kenya region after Gachagua’s removal from the Deputy President position.
During this visit, some leaders who had supported Gachagua during his impeachment shifted their stance amid the political tension.
Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, one of the senators who stood firmly with Gachagua and voted in his favour on all impeachment charges, was compelled to publicly apologize to the President during Ruto’s visit to Laikipia.
“Your Excellency, people sometimes create a lot of issues, and at times you may slip, but slipping isn’t falling. People slip and sometimes make mistakes along the way,” he said.
Mount Kenya leaders present expressed strong support for Ruto, condemning tribal politics and pledging to help him fulfill his promises.
Kiunjuri Roots for Ruto
Laikipia MP Mwangi Kiunjuri emphasized the importance of unity, stating that the region must connect with the rest of the country as one Kenyan community.
“Our Excellency, we cannot afford to be discriminated against or to discriminate against ourselves and set ourselves against other communities. We know that we live in Kenya,” Kiunjuri said.
Kiunjuri, who has been a vocal critic of Gachagua, added that the region would support President Ruto.
