Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) Eric Wamumbi has publicly denounced an alleged impeachment motion against Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua, labeling it as a fake document.
In a statement on Wednesday, Wamumbi asked leaders to avoid sideshows and instead focus on their work.
“Kindly note that the letter doing round on social media is fake. I ask all leaders to focus on their work and avoid sideshows,” he stated.
The motion, purportedly presented by Wamumbi, on July 8, 2024, and addressed to the Speaker, has since circulated widely on social media.
The flagged motion sought to remove Gachagua from office, accusing him of gross violations of constitutional provisions, criminal conduct, and gross misconduct.
It cited recent revelations and investigations that purportedly uncovered significant concerns regarding Gachagua’s conduct and responsibilities, including the violation of multiple provisions of the Constitution and other relevant laws.
Furthermore, the document outlined serious allegations, including the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive intelligence information, which could potentially compromise national security, diplomatic relations, or ongoing investigations.
These accusations were presented as grounds for initiating impeachment proceedings under Article 150 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

The accusations also asserted that Gachagua had been involved in the misappropriation of public funds for personal gain, contrary to the principles of public finance management outlined in the Constitution, specifically Chapter 6.
Additionally, the DP was accused of abusing his office to influence judicial proceedings and administrative decisions, thereby compromising the independence and integrity of government institutions.

“In light of these grave allegations and the imperative to uphold the rule of law and accountability in public office, this Assembly hereby resolves to initiate impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua under Article 150 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” reads part of the flagged motion.
Gachagua and Wamumbi Rift
Wamumbi and Gachagua have recently been drawing on different lines over the war against illicit alcohol in the county.
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi confirmed on Sunday July 7, that he has fallen out with his once-close ally Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Wamumbi stated that he and the DP are not currently seeing eye-to-eye. However, he denied that their fallout resulted from the closure of bars within Nyeri County.
“It is true, there is a Rift between the Deputy president and me. The rift is not about the closed bars in Karatina town which have left the town dead for four months,” Wamumbi said in a post on his Facebook account.

The lawmaker went on to claim that there is something bigger that has led to their fallout, and Gachagua should come out and speak the truth.
“It is about something bigger than that, he should say the truth, and nothing but the truth. I will be telling the truth, and the people of Mathira will pick which side to believe in.”
This came after Gachagua warned President William Ruto not to allow “overzealous officers at Harambee House with a Political Scheme to interfere with the war against Illicit brew as those people will set him against the people.
Gachagua played a pivotal role in Wamumbi’s election as Mathira MP in 2022, as he was poised to replace Wamumbi when he was chosen by Ruto as his running mate.
