Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has provided an update on Kenyans stranded in Myanmar.
In a statement dated March 2, 2025, the Ministry confirmed that 64 Kenyans are currently awaiting repatriation at the Thai-Myanmar border after being rescued from scam compounds in Myanmar.
“The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs confirms that 64 Kenyans are currently waiting at the Thai-Myanmar border, ready to cross into Thailand after being rescued from scam compounds in Myanmar,” the statement read.
According to the Ministry, the rescued Kenyans are part of over 7,000 foreigners from more than 30 nationalities who were rescued by two armed groups—the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and the Border Guard Force (BGF).
Kenyans stuck in Myanmar
The Kenyans, along with other rescued individuals, have been unable to cross into Thailand due to the closure of the border crossing since February 12, 2025.
This closure has delayed the repatriation process, despite the first wave of 260 foreigners, including 23 Kenyans, being handed over to the Royal Thai Army by the DKBA earlier this year.
“The Ministry further informs Kenyans that the government is exploring alternative routes to bring them home.
The State Department for Diaspora Affairs, which is leading a multi-agency team and working in conjunction with the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok and HAART Kenya, has finalized logistical arrangements to facilitate their return so they can be reunited with their families,” the statement further read.

Furthermore, the Ministry stated that the Kenyan Ambassador to Thailand has maintained daily communication with the stranded Kenyans, providing updates on the government’s efforts to secure their safe return.
Government Urges Kenyans to be Cautious of Online Job Advertisements
The Ministry stated that it is actively engaging with Thai authorities to reopen the border on humanitarian grounds, allowing the rescued nationals to enter Thailand for onward repatriation to Kenya.
Moreover, the government has advised citizens to verify the legitimacy of online job advertisements by consulting the State Department for Diaspora Affairs.
Additionally, Kenyans are reminded to only use private recruitment agencies that are registered and licensed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

The statement from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs came days after several Kenyans were rescued from scam compounds in Myanmar following delicate negotiations.
According to the MFA, authorities rescued 261 foreigners among them 24 Kenyans.
