The Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory following the discovery of an unidentified metallic object that fell from the sky in Mukuku Village, Mbooni East Sub-County, Makueni.
While preliminary assessments indicate no immediate health threats, the ministry has urged the public to avoid the area where the object landed and refrain from handling unknown materials.
Additionally, communities have been advised to report any health concerns or unusual environmental changes to local health officials.
Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and safety, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided.
The discovery has sparked safety and security discussions, with authorities working to uncover the origin and potential implications of the metallic ring.

Action Taken by the Govt After the Discovery
Consequently, the Ministry of Health outlined key actions to mitigate potential public health risks associated with the object including guidance on public health risks.
“Protocols have been developed for handling unidentified objects and managing potential exposure to hazardous materials.”
Additionally, specialized teams including experts in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) safety, environmental health, disaster response, and risk communication have been engaged to ensure thorough management of the incident.
Further, health promoters and local authorities are working together to enhance risk communication and address public concerns.
Mental health and psychosocial support are also being offered to affected communities. Authorities are strengthening national disaster preparedness and response capacity for chemical, radiological, and biological incidents.
Additional measures include developing a comprehensive policy framework for managing hazardous materials and acquiring more protective equipment for emergency responders.

Kenya Space Agency Reports on the Mysterious Metallic Ring
The incident occurred on December 30, 2024, at around 3:00 PM, causing a loud bang that was heard several kilometres away. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
A multi-agency response team, comprising the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), Kenya Space Agency (KSA), Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), and the Ministry of Health (MoH), was immediately deployed to secure the area and investigate the incident.
After investigations, the Kenya Space Agency, initial investigations revealed that the object was a metallic ring approximately 2.5 meters in diameter and weighing 500 kilograms.
It is believed to have originated from a space launch vehicle, potentially a rocket.
“The Kenya Space Agency wishes to clarify that investigations into the space object fragments incident in Mukuku Village, Makueni County, are still ongoing and the Kenya Space Agency has not reached any conclusions or attributed the space object to any space actor yet.
“The Kenya Space Agency is working with partners to identify the particular space object and/or space activity that led to the dropping of the fragments in a populated area, and attribute ownership,” Kenya Space Agency noted in a statement.
