The Tourism Regulatory Authority has revoked the license of Taita Hills Resort following multiple complaints lodged against the establishment regarding allegations of harassment, racial abuse, and mistreatment of workers.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, February 12, the Chairman of the Authority, Benjamin Washiali, stated that the Tourism Regulatory Authority had recommended the revocation of the resort’s license.

“The Authority has recommended the cancellation of Mr. Zanchief Kumar’s work permit to the Directorate of Immigration Services.
We have made this recommendation, and I believe it is now with the Immigration Department because his character is not one, we would want to approve as an Authority,” Washiali said.

On his part, Tourism Regulatory Authority CEO Nobert Talam emphasized the need for fair treatment of employees, warning that necessary action would be taken against those found guilty of such misconduct.
“And we are appealing to all other facilities because, as I mentioned before, we are investigating quite a number where general managers are using vulgar language on staff. They are mistreating staff, and we are saying that has to stop.

Any investor in the sector, please ensure that all your employees, especially those with work permits, treat their staff well. This habit has been prevalent in the sector, and we will not hesitate to take action.” Talam emphasized.

The revocation of the license came days after a viral video circulated on social media, showing the resort’s general manager yelling at staff and pouring food that some employees were preparing.
Taita Hills Responds to Allegations of Harassment
However, in a statement on Tuesday, February 4, the management claimed that the video circulating on social media was from an incident that occurred a year ago and was resolved internally without any harm caused to staff.

Furthermore, the Taita Hills Resort Management dismissed claims of harassment, racial abuse, and mistreatment of workers within the establishment.
“We wish to address recent misinformation circulating in the media concerning the operations at Taita Hills and Salt Lick Safari Lodge, as well as our esteemed General Manager.
Regarding the allegations of discrimination, racism, and hostility, we categorically reject these claims,”part of the statement read.
