Grammy Awards: Taylor Swift Makes History as Tyla Tops in Africa

Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, SZA and Michelle Obama were among some of the winners at the 2024 Grammy Awards held on Sunday, February 4.

The awards were handed out in 94 categories and presented in two different ceremonies in Los Angeles.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnight’ won the album of the year award making her the first performer to win the prize four times.

Swift also won the best pop vocal album and used the opportunity to reveal a surprise album.

Among the songs nominated for the Album of the Year included Endless Sumar Vacation by Miley Cyrus, GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo, The Age of Pleasure by Janelle Monae, and World Music Radio by Jon Batiste.

Miley Cyrus song “Flowers” won two awards: the Record of the Year award and the Best pop solo performance award.

The song ‘What Was I made For?’ by Billie Eilish O’Connell and Finneas 0’Connel won the Song of the Year award.

African Music Performance 

Nigerian musicians dominated the list of the best African music performance nominees, but they all lost to South African Tyla.

Water by Tyla won the award ahead of ASAKE and Olamide (Amapiano), Burna Boy (City Boys), Davido featuring Musa Keys (UNAVAILABLE) and Ayra Starr (Rush).

Tyla’s hit single peaked in January 2024 at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years. Thank you to the recording academy for this category. It’s also important,” Tyla said as she accepted the award.

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama won the best audio book narration and storytelling recording with her book The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times.

Pop Category Grammy Awards Winners

Victoria Monet won the best new artist, Jack Antonoff producer of the year, non-classical and Theron Thomas song writer of the year, non-classical.

‘Ghost In the Machine’ by SZA featuring Phoebe Bridgers won best pop duo or group performance while the best dance or electronic recording went to Skrillex, Fred again and Flowdan in their song Rumble.

Padam Padam by Kylie Minogue won the best pop dance recording, Actual Life by Fred again was named the best electronic music album.

Also, ‘This Is Why’ by Paramore won the best rock album and the best alternative music performance.

Not Strong Enough by Boygenious won the best rock performance and the best rock song award.

R&B

72 Seasons by Metallica won the best metal performance, The Record by boygenious won the best alternative music album while ICU by Coco Jones won the best R&B performance award.

PJ Morton featuring Susan Carol song ‘Good Morning’ won the best traditional R&B performance award while Jaguar II by Victoria Monet was the best R&B album.

Two songs by SZA appeared on the list i.e ‘Snooze’ best R&B song and ‘SOS’ best progressive R&B album.

Rap

The song ‘Scientists & Engineers” won the best rap performance award and was also named the best rap song.

It features several artists including Killer Mike, Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.

Lil Durk won the best melodic rap performance went with ‘All My Life’ while MICHAEL by Killer Mike won the best rap album.

Jazz

The Light Inside by J.Ivy won the best-spoken word poetry album while Samara’s ‘Tight’ won the best jazz performance award.

Nicole Zuraitis ‘How Love Begins’ won the best jazz vocal album while the ‘The Winds of Change’ by Billy Childsa was the best jazz instrumental album.

Gospel

All Things by Kirk Franklin grabbed the best gospel performance song while ‘All Things New in Orlando’ by Tye Tribbett was named the best gospel album.

Church Clothes 4 by Lecrae won the best contemporary Christian music album.

Best Global Song

Shakti’s ‘This Moment’ was named the best global music album ahead of Burna Boy’s ‘I Told Them’ and Davido’s Timeless at the 2024 Grammy awards.

Colors of Royal by Julian Marley and Antaeus won the best reggae album while Dave Chappelle’s ‘Whats in A Name’ won the best comedy album.
