The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has released a list of the Cabinet Secretaries set to lead in the tree planting exercise for the 2nd week of May starting from Monday, May 13, to Friday, May 17, 2024.
The exercise is in line with the accelerated program announced by President William Ruto on Friday May 10 during the tree-planting exercise in Kiambicho Forest in Murang’a.

President Ruto said the project will continue for the next six months, with every ministry allocated a day for planting trees.
“We are not just planting trees today, from Monday, this exercise will continue ministry by ministry daily. For the next six months, every ministry will be in charge for a day for planting trees” Ruto noted.

According to the head of state, the drive is aimed at helping the government achieve its target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

As per the schedule, Attorney General Justin Muturi will on Monday May 13 spearhead the tree planting exercise at Ngong Hills Forest in Kajiado County.
Cabinet Secretaries Leading Tree Planting Exercise This Week
Meanwhile, on Tuesday May 14, Education CS Machogu will lead the tree- planting drive in Trans-Nzoia County at Sosio, Saboti, Kapolet and Saiwa Swamp.
Blue Economy CS Salim Mvurya will lead the activity in Tana River County at Hirimana and Mwinai Forest on Wednesday May 15.
He will also spearhead the planting of the trees in Lamu county at Pandanguo and Lake Kenyatta.
On Thursday May 16, Tourism CS Alfred Mutua will lead the exercise in Kitui County at Muumoni and Itikoni Wetland.
He will later join the public in Taita Taveta County at Lake Jipe Wetland in planting trees.
Finally, on Friday May 17, Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir will take over the drive in Kericho and Baringo Counties.

In Kericho, he will lead the exercise at Londiani and Kapnawai Wetland while in Baringo he will join the residents at Narasha, Mukutani Forest, Koibatek Forest and Kamnarok Wetland.
The programming follows President Ruto’s pledge on increasing the country’s forest cover from 12 per cent to 30 per cent.
“Climate change is a reality we live with every day. This is why we stopped all other business today to plant trees,” Ruto said.
“We must look for a solution to climate change, and the solution is planting and growing trees.”
