Motorists in Kenya are set to pay among the highest fuel prices in the region after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) set the maximum pump prices of petrol at KSh 206.97 per liter and diesel at KSh 206.84 per liter for the period from April 15 to May 14, 2026.
In the fuel pricing review issued on April 14 by EPRA, the maximum pump prices for Super Petrol and Diesel were raised by Ksh28.69 per liter and Ksh40.30 per liter, respectively, while Kerosene prices were left unchanged.
How Other East African Countries Compare to Kenya
Fuel prices across Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia remain lower than those in Kenya, though levels differ depending on regulatory systems, transport costs, and the extent of government intervention.
In Uganda, where prices in Kampala are typically at the higher end of the national range, pump rates are still below Kenya’s.
Regional price comparisons published by the Daily Monitor show petrol retailing between KSh 173 and KSh 187 per litre, while diesel sells for between KSh 164 and KSh 181.
In Tanzania, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has capped petrol prices in Dar es Salaam at about KSh 191 per liter, with diesel selling at roughly KSh 190 per liter for April 2026.
Prices rise slightly in inland towns due to transportation and distribution costs from the coast, but they remain lower than in Kenya, according to EWURA’s official pricing schedule.
Rwanda applies a zonal fuel pricing system that reflects differences in transport and supply costs.
Petrol prices range from approximately KSh 177 per liter in lower-cost zones to a ceiling of KSh 206 per liter, while diesel prices range between KSh 174 and KSh 196, according to The New Times.

Although Rwanda’s highest petrol prices are close to Kenya’s, most zones record lower average prices.
Ethiopia records the lowest fuel prices among the countries compared. Petrol retails at about KSh 118 per litre, while diesel sells roughly KSh 135 per litre, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com.
The lower prices are largely attributed to government controls and subsidies in Ethiopia’s fuel market.
Fuel Prices Across Kenya and Neighboring Countries
A comparison of fuel pump prices across Kenya and neighboring countries shows notable differences in the cost of petrol and diesel as of April 2026.
Kenya records the highest prices in the region following the latest EPRA adjustments.

Kenya Transporters Call for Transport Rate Review After Fuel Price Hike
The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) has asked its members to review their operating costs and adjust transport charges following the latest fuel price increase.
In a statement, the association said the rise in fuel costs is too steep for transporters to absorb without adjusting their pricing.
KTA advised members to engage their customers and business partners as soon as possible to explain the reasons for the adjustments and to maintain service continuity.
