Mayfair Insurance is a Kenyan-based general insurance company that began operations in 2005 and has since expanded its presence to several other African countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As the company marks its 20th anniversary, one of its founders, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, has shared the story of how the company was established, celebrating the milestones it has achieved over the years.
The idea of forming Mayfair Insurance first emerged in 1994, when Peter Kenneth and a group of friends registered the company’s name but did not proceed with operations at the time.
Peter Kenneth decided to name the business “Mayfair,” inspired by the Monopoly board game and the London district of the same name. He and his friends wanted a brand that symbolized class, stability, and reliability.
The inspiration came from the need for a company that could offer something different, one that combined strong underwriting discipline with local knowledge and efficient, customer-focused service built on genuine relationships.
However, the idea did not materialize at the time because each of the founders was pursuing their own interests.
Years later, Peter Kenneth and his friends revisited the plan they had shelved, and in 2005, Mayfair Insurance was officially established.
The founding team, led by Peter Kenneth and including Rasik Patel, V.M. Patel, Tushar Shah (all deceased), and Senior Counsel Ambrose Rachier, shared a vision of creating a trusted, locally owned insurance company for Kenyans, at a time when the market was largely dominated by foreign insurers.
