The Kenyatta family, descendants of Kenya’s founding President Jomo Kenyatta, has built one of the country’s most diversified business empires over several decades.
Much of their wealth is managed through Enke Investments Ltd, a central holding company that oversees stakes in various sectors, often through structured ownership and directorships.
The family’s approach has been defined by diversification across sectors central to the Kenyan economy, including banking, agriculture, media, hospitality, real estate, and manufacturing.
Banking and Dairy Form the Core of Kenyatta’s Family Wealth
A major pillar of the Kenyatta family’s financial strength is banking, particularly their stake in NCBA Group, one of Kenya’s largest financial institutions.
The family holds an estimated 13.2 percent stake, tracing back to their ownership of the former Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) before its merger with NIC Bank.

This investment not only provides dividend income but also positions the family well within Kenya’s financial sector.
In agriculture, the most prominent asset is Brookside Dairy, widely regarded as the family’s flagship business.
Established in 1993, Brookside has grown into Kenya’s largest milk processor and has expanded its operations across East Africa.
The growth of Brookside Dairy has been driven by acquisitions of smaller dairy firms, such as Ilara Dairy, Delamere, and Molo Milk, thereby expanding its market share and regional reach.
The Kenyattas own extensive farmland, including Gicheha Farms, as well as tea plantations, ranches, and other agricultural ventures that continue to generate value.
Media and Hospitality Expand Economic Reach
The Kenyatta family has also established a presence in the media sector through Mediamax Network Ltd, which owns outlets such as K24 TV, People Daily, and several radio stations, including Kameme FM and Milele FM
In tourism and hospitality, their investments are channeled through the Heritage Hotels Group, a collection of high-end properties located in prime tourism destinations.
These include the Voyager Beach Resort in Mombasa, the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, and safari lodges such as the Intrepid camps in the Mara and Samburu
Kenyatta Family Land Ownership and Real Estate Development
The Kenyatta family is reported to be among the largest private landowners in Kenya, with estimates often placing their holdings at over 500,000 acres.

One of the most notable projects built on this land is Northlands City, a large-scale mixed-use development located in Ruiru.
The project is designed to include residential areas, industrial zones, and commercial spaces, reflecting a long-term strategy to transform land ownership for urban and economic development.
This combination of land ownership and property development has enabled the family to build long-term value.
Industrial Ventures and Centralized Management
In addition to its core sectors, the Kenyatta family empire includes industrial and educational interests such as Timsales Corporation, which focuses on timber and forestry products, and Beta Healthcare, a pharmaceutical manufacturer.
The family is also linked to Peponi School, one of Kenya’s well-known private educational institutions.
The day-to-day management of many of these businesses is widely attributed to Muhoho Kenyatta, who is seen as the operational head of the family’s commercial ventures
Muhoho holds positions across several companies, including Brookside Dairy and Heritage Hotels.
Disclosures from the Pandora Papers in 2021 revealed that members of the family, including Uhuru Kenyatta, Mama Ngina, and Muhoho, are linked to several offshore companies in jurisdictions such as Panama and the British Virgin Islands.
These entities have been used for asset holding and wealth management purposes.
Much of the Kenyatta family’s wealth is held through complex corporate structures, making direct ownership difficult to trace in some cases.
