What is Happening in Goma

Goma, located near the border of Rwanda, has faced ongoing instability due to conflicts in the eastern DRC, which frequently disrupts local infrastructure and airspace safety.

As of Monday, January 27, the M23 rebel group is reported to have seized control of Goma, a major city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following intense clashes with the Congolese army.

However, the government has denied the claim, stating that its forces still control strategic locations, including Goma’s airport.

Residents shared videos of M23 fighters patrolling Goma’s streets after a rapid advance on Sunday, January 26, which forced tens of thousands to flee from nearby towns.

Also, local media reported that, after hours of gunfire and explosions, Goma’s streets were largely quiet, though confusion persisted.

The DRC government has accused Rwanda of backing the M23 and escalating the conflict. In response, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for Rwanda to withdraw its forces and for the M23 to halt its offensive.

However, Rwanda has denied direct involvement, blaming the DRC for the crisis.

Key roads around Goma remain blocked, and the city’s airport is no longer accessible for evacuations or humanitarian aid.

The situation has also led the UN to withdraw non-essential staff from the city, and reports of looting have added to the chaos.
