Popular car dealer Joseph Kairu Wambui, also known as Khalif Kairo, has responded to lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi’s offer to assist him amid the ongoing woes facing his company Kai and Karo. Kairo is accused of defrauding two clients.
The car dealer was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, January 13, on charges of defrauding the clients of Ksh2.1 million and Ksh2.9 million, respectively.
On Tuesday, Senior Counsel Abdullahi commented on the case, offering to mediate between Kairo and the complainants to resolve the matter amicably.
He also called out a section of Kenyans who have been celebrating Kairo’s misfortunes, emphasizing that all businesses face challenges.
“Good people, all types of businesses face challenges and difficult times, and this young man is facing business struggles. Taking him to court isn’t the right way to treat aspiring Kenyans who are working hard in a tough, hostile business environment. I’m willing to mediate between him and the complainants to resolve this matter amicably. I can help!” Ahmednasir wrote on X.

In the ongoing case, Kairo is accused of deceiving Jeff Kyule Munane between July 10 and July 29, 2024, in Westlands, Nairobi.
The alleged scheme involved his company, Kai & Karo Limited, collecting Ksh2,145,150 under the pretense of facilitating the importation of a Honda Vezel Hybrid vehicle from Japan, which was never delivered.
In another incident, the businessman is accused of obtaining Ksh2.9 million from Dona Ayalo Okoth ‘through a fraudulent trick, claiming to be in a position to import a Subaru Outback vehicle.

While presenting an affidavit on behalf of the prosecution, investigating officer Esther Mburu opposed bail on the grounds that the businessman is a significant flight risk.
The affidavit stated that granting bail would jeopardize the judicial process, claiming that Kairo’s actions indicate a pattern of deliberate deception.
The prosecution further pointed out that the accused has the means and potential to evade justice if released, citing his alleged history of involvement in fraudulent schemes.
Kairo, on his part, denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina and claimed through his lawyers led by Danstan Omari, that the cases were orchestrated by jealousy of his business rivals.
Omari said Kairo has been in the car business for 10 years and the problem started after he became an online wizard which has irked the old hands in the industry where Khalif is taking over.
Chief Magistrate Onyina is set to make a ruling on whether to release Khalif on bond or not on Tuesday.
In the meantime, the businessman was detained at the Capitol Hill police station.
