The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has launched newly refurbished Z9 helicopters from the China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC).
Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Tarus presided over the commissioning of the helicopters at the Kenya Army Corps of Aviation, Embakasi Garrison on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

KDF has explained that the collaboration with CATIC is a significant milestone in enhancing Kenya’s military capabilities.
The partnership encompasses various aspects, including military equipment procurement, technology transfer, joint training, and strategic cooperation, all contributing to Kenya’s operational readiness.

In his speech, Tarus commended the support by CATIC’, describing the partnership as a crucial step forward for Kenya Army Aviation in defending the nation and ensuring regional security.
He emphasized that the new equipment would enable soldiers to execute their duties more effectively.

“Our partnership fosters a culture of collaboration and trust. Together, we will continue to innovate, improve, and push the boundaries of military aviation. Success in the airspace relies not only on advanced technology but also on the strength of the relationships between nations,” Gen. Tarus said.
Li Houding, Vice President of CATIC, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that the collaboration would leverage aviation technology expertise to accelerate progress.
“Through joint research and development and the sharing of best practices in aircraft maintenance, we aim to enhance the capabilities of Kenya Army Aviation,” he said.

About Z9 Helicopter
The Z9 helicopter, a utility military aircraft primarily designed for troop transport, represents an advanced tool in the Kenya Army’s aviation arsenal.
There have been questions about the safety of KDF choppers with some accidents reported in the last five years.

KDF Chopper Accidents
In April 2024, a KDF helicopter crashed in the Sindar area, near the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, killing ten occupants, including then Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla.
This was preceded by a crash on November 20, 2023, where three people sustained injuries after a helicopter on its way to collect Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination papers crashed at Wajir Airport.
On that same day, a cargo helicopter carrying food aid to residents affected by flash floods crashed in Buna, Wajir North.
Additionally, undisclosed number of KDF officers were killed in a helicopter accident in Lamu on September 18 the same year.
In June 2021, 10 KDF officers were killed while 13 left injured after a military chopper crashed in Oltepesi area, a few kilometres from Kisamis in Kajiado.
