Motorists using Mombasa Road should brace for major traffic changes starting this weekend, following a public notice issued by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
The authority in a statement on Wednesday, April 16, announced a temporary disruption on the Mombasa-bound lanes near the Katani Road Junction on Mombasa Road, effective Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 10:00 PM.Â
Further, the notice indicated that the disruption would last for 92 days, ending on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 6:00 AM.
Moreover, KeNHA explained that the 92-day disruption is meant to facilitate the installation of fabricated footbridge beams at the busy junction, to ease pedestrian movement and enhance safety in the long term.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) near Katani Road Junction will experience traffic disruption along the Mombasa bound lanes
“From Saturday, 19th April, 2025 at 10.00 PM to Sunday, 20th July, 2025 at 6.00 AM,” the authority noted in part.

KeNHA Announces Alternative Routes for Motorists
The authority has since issued a traffic management plan for motorists, with diversions and lane closures affecting vehicles heading towards Mombasa.
Additionally, KeNHA has urged motorists to adhere to the proposed detours and cooperate with police and traffic marshals on-site to reduce delays and confusion.
The management plan includes the layout of the affected sections, covering areas from Syokimau Airport Road to Katani Road and Mwembeni.
“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” added KeNHA.Â
The authority has assured road users that the project is part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure along one of the country’s busiest highways.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and stay alert for updates during the construction period.

Earlier Traffic Disruptions Announced
In an earlier Thursday, April 10 statement, the authority announced the temporary closure of Thika Road at the Kihunguro area to facilitate critical highway maintenance works.
The closure began on the night of Friday, April 11, 2025, and continued through to the morning of Monday, April 14, 2025.
The public notice issued by KeNHA detailed that the affected section was closed daily between 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM.
The roadworks was aimed at enhancing the safety and durability of the highway.
