The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced new return trips and departure times for trains from Kisumu as Christmas holiday travel continues to peak.
In a statement on Tuesday, December 31, KRC revealed that the train will depart from Kisumu at 6:00 PM on three days a week: Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
This new schedule will remain in effect until January 15, 2025.
“Take note of the schedule below for return trips from Kisumu. The train departs Kisumu at 6:00 PM on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays,” read the statement in part.
“This schedule will remain valid until January 15, 2025.”
Earlier, on December 19, Managing Director Philip Mainga, while announcing two additional trips between Kisumu and Nairobi, stated that the train to Nairobi would depart Kisumu Railway Station on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays at 6:40 PM.
“We are pleased to announce that following the resumption of the Kisumu Safari Train, we have introduced additional trips to and from Kisumu up to January 15, 2025,” the notice by the Managing Director read.
“The train to Kisumu will be departing the Nairobi Central Station on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4 p.m. The train to Nairobi will be departing the Kisumu Railway Station on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays at 6:40 pm.”

This means that the train will now depart 40 minutes earlier than it has been, and there will be no travel on Wednesdays, but instead on Thursdays.
Prior to the December 19 changes, the train often made one trip from Nairobi every Friday at 6:30 pm and arrived in Kisumu at 6:30 am.

The return trip was usually set for every Sunday with the train departing the New Kisumu Railway station at 6:30 pm to arrive in Nairobi at 6:35 am.

The train makes stopovers at Line Saba, Kibera, Satellite, Lenana, Dagoreti, Kikuyu, Muguga, Limuru, Uplands, Matathia, Kijabe, Longonot, Naivasha, and Nakuru.
Others include Njoro, Molo, Elburgon, Fort Ternan, Londiani, Muhoroni, Miwani, Chemelil, Kibigori, and Kibos stations to drop off and pick up passengers.
The price of a First-Class ticket to Kisumu costs Ksh 2,400, while an Economy Class ticket costs Ksh 900. The train was launched three years ago to provide greater convenience for passengers travelling from that side.
