Kenya Railways Announces New Fare Prices Ahead of Festive Season

The Kenya Railways Corporation has announced new fare prices for passengers plying the Nairobi- Kisumu route, in anticipation of the festive season.

Kenya Railways made the communication while announcing the resumption of the Kisumu Safari train service.

“We are pleased to announce that our Kisumu Safari train service has resumed. Please review the detailed information below for adequate preparation. Thank you for choosing our service,” read the announcement.

New fare prices for the Nairobi- Kisumu route

Kenya Railways will charge Ksh900 for the economy class ticket, while those who wish to travel in the first-class coaches will part with Khs2,400 for a ticket. The changes will take effect December 6, 2024.

Kenya Railways also went ahead to give a breakdown of the train schedule. The train will depart the Nairobi Central Station every Friday at 4pm and will arrive at the Kisumu station on Saturday at 6.30 pm.

Passengers will board three trains on their journey, both from Nairobi to Kisumu and vice versa.

From the Nairobi Central Railway Station, passengers will board the commuter train at 4pm for the Nairobi Terminus. Here, they will board the Madaraka Express that departs at 5.20pm for the Maai Mahiu station.

Kisumu Safari train schedule

At the Maai Mahiu station passengers will board their final train, that departs at 6.55pm for the Kisumu Station. Passengers will arrive at their destination at 6.30pm.

The return train departs from Kisumu on Sunday at 6.30pm for the Maai Mahiu station. The Madaraka express leaves the station for the Nairobi Terminus at 5.45am.

Here, the commuter train departs for at 7.29 am to arrive at the Nairobi Central Station at 8 am.

Kenya Railways has notified passengers that luggage to be carried in the train should not exceed a width of 160 centimeters and a length of 200 centimeters.

Passengers have also been informed that they must arrive at the station one hour before the departure time.
