The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has outlined measures and safety precautions to promote passengers and staff safety when boarding and disembarking from trains.
This is aimed at enhancing the efficiency and safety of its systems. Safety measures listed by the corporation include allowing other passengers to step off the train before you board, among others.
The corporation emphasizes giving priority to the safety of passengers, employees, partners, and the public. This will apply when on and around the trains and the railway stations.
The first precaution is to observe the yellow line. The management has advised passengers to Stand behind the yellow line until the train comes to a complete stop.
The yellow line serves to prevent passengers from accidentally falling onto the railway tracks or being struck by oncoming trains. Proximity to the line can induce dizziness that increases the risk of falling onto the rail tracks.

Do not force doors to open or attempt to board when the train is leaving the platform. This was another instruction given by the corporation. If a passenger misses a train, wait for the next scheduled one.
To ensure a smooth transition between those boarding and those alighting, the Kenya railways has requested their passengers to allow other passengers to step off the train before they board.
KRC also indicated that the measure would reduce time wastage during round trips. Additionally, they stated that it would prevent cases of collision and falling among passengers.
More safety precautions
Still on boarding and alighting from the trains, the corporation has instructed their Station attendants and train crew to assist passengers with special needs to board the train. “Station attendants have been given training on how to handle people with disability. Including giving them priority when boarding and getting off trains,” the statement read in part.
If you are travelling on a pram or a shopping trolley, board the front carriage so you are visible to the driver.
Passengers with heavy luggage are subject to specific guidelines set by train operators, including pointers on getting off and on the train, and ensuring utilization of spaces allocated for heavy luggage.
When boarding the train, enter the pram first and lift the back in if the train isn’t level with the platform. To ensure there is stability, even distribution of weight on the pram prevents trips and falls.
Additionally, when getting off the train, make sure you step off first and then draw the pram towards you to prevent it from rolling away.
When getting on or off, use the grip rails to help you stay balanced. Grab rails are positioned carefully to provide passengers with stability when boarding and disembarking from trains.
